Location location location!!
We can definately recommend this hotel for a stay in Hangzhou. The location is perfect - literally on the West Lake shore and the price is much less than other lakeside hotels. We had a wonderful view of the lake from our window - we recommend booking a room with a view.
The hotel is also only a short walk away from a Metro station - Longxiangqiao, and
the metro is as efficient and easy to use as those in Beijing and Shanghai.
Not many Westerners stay at this hotel - in fact, I think we might have been the only ones there at the time we stayed there. However, the staff at the front desk speak English and we were able to communicate effectively. There is free Wifi which is a good bonus.
The rooms are basic, but perfectly fine and clean. I would say a bit more upmarket than a Travelodge in the UK. We were very comfortable there and if we are ever
in Hangzhou again we would choose this hotel.
Breakfast is served on the top floor in a large communal dining hall, where you have to share a large round table with other guests. It is served from
7am, but we found it much less crowded later on, at around 9am. Breakfast is definately not Western - it is very Chinese, interesting but might not
be to everyone's taste. A good interesting experience though.
A walk along the West Lake is recommended early morning before breakfast, to see the Tai Chi, dancing, singing etc - a fabulous experience.

Stayed here just before the G20 summit so was a bit of a surreal experience seeing the area so quiet. Visited hangzhou several times and although admittedly it's not the best standard of hotel, it is perfect for location. Busiest part of the lake and not too far away from the market street. Would stay again as it's cheap compared to the other hotels nearby. Beware of the 'east villa' rooms. They are much lower standard than the main building. Also hotel looks past it's prime but still okay.

Good value for excellent locat....
We've stayed at this superbly located hotel at least 4 times. The hotel is badly in need of refurbishment but the rooms are large and one gains an excellent outlook from the lake view room which is what we always request. The carpets are filthy and badly in need of replacement but the do provide much needed slippers! The breakfast menu has not changed since my first visit 14 years ago. The hotel name indicates that desk staff would have a reasonable command of English but put your translator app on before your visit as English is very limited. We overlook all this for location. Hotels just 3 doors away are charging at least 4 times the amount. Yes we will certainly use the Overseas Chinese Hotel each time we visit Hangzhou after all with a location like that , how much time does one spend in the room?

The best location in Hangzhou.
We stayed there for 7 nights. First night, we stayed in a room at the back of the hotel ( we had to cross the backyard carpark from the main lobby they called it "back to lake" room type). The lift was like the warehouse lift. The room was big but it was very run down. Then we upgraded to the room in the main lobby. It was much better. Although the hotel is old but it is well maintained. The mattrass is hard. But all the negative points were offset by the great location. You come down from the lift and voila.........you can see the lake. And for that price you cannot get it anywhere in front of the lake. Some staff understood simple English and very helpful so it will not be a problem. Will come back again esp for the good location.

Location, Location, Location
The old real estate slogan was "location, location, location".
Hangzhou Overseas Chinese Hotel has all three.
1. It has uninterrupted access and views across Hangzhou's West Lake.
2. Immediately behind the hotel is the Hangzhou CBD, full of department stores, supermarkets, shops, stalls, restaurants and pubs.
3. It is close and within easy walking distance of Hangzhou bus station and subway station, making access to other parts of the city and other parts of China very easy.
The hotel is older style and is showing its age. The carpets are threadbare in some places, and the heavy dark wood furniture in the rooms is depressing. The bathtub in our bedroom was yellowing with age, and many of the tiles were cracked. It will not be long before the hotel's owners will have to invest in a major renovation to maintain capital on this excellent spot.
Despite this, the hotel is immaculately clean and tidy and the staff professional and friendly.
And at 400 Yuan a night for a double it is excellent value. The Hyatt Regency just up the road starts at 1,700 Yuan.
