So so hotel
All right for a one day short stay. Hotel is in need of upgrading. Bare minimum for the price. There are other hotels nearby with better amenities for the same price but you need to book early.
Nothing to shout about other than location being convenient to Guangzhou east railway station.

Not very nice hotel in a good ....
The only thing that's nice with this hotel is the price and location. Across the road, you find a 7-11, a bakeshop, Bank of China (for currency exchanges), beside is a pizza hut, kfc, a Vietnamese restaurant and about a block away, a shopping mall and metro station.
However, the problem is the hotel itself. It's a 1 to 2 star hotel with an in-house spa and restaurants on 2nd to 9th floor. Rooms begin at the 10th floor. The hallway from the elevator to the rooms smell awful (really awful). It's that moldy smell from the carpet that is all over the hallway. Inside the room, it's worse. Even though there is no carpet in the room, it still smells awful. It's a different smell from the hallway but whatever it is, it's really awful. I tried opening the window for about 3 hours while I was out, used an old card to turn the power on so I can turn on the a/c but when I came back, the smell was still there. Where it was coming from, I do not know. The a/c doesn't cool properly. There's a water dispenser inside the room. It would have been very convenient but the water tastes a funny. Common sense suggests not to drink it.
The shower door doesn't close (causing the area near the lavatory to be soaking wet) because there was no handle and it's quite hard to slide without the handle.
Then comes the bed. It was like lying in a wooden bed. It's very hard and you can feel the springs underneath. The in-room safe was not very safe. It just weighs about 3 kilos and would be very easy to carry. If the thief can't open it, he can just bring it. It may still be useful but it’s not really a “safe” safe.
There’s also a computer in the room. However, the computer is set to display in Chinese characters. Even the Internet Explorer is set in Chinese. All the prompts/errors are in Chinese and it seems I won’t be able to use the computer to surf the web because I don’t understand Chinese characters. The tv (a 32” lcd) channels are all Chinese.
If they can remove that awful smell, find ways to somewhat "soften" their beds and fix or just even clean their a/c so that it would sufficiently cool the room, I would definitely stay there again. The “Chinese only” computer and tv won’t bother me. The in-room safe, the funny-tasting water, the "handle-less" shower door, these are very minor things. The biggest and unfathomable factor is the AWFUL SMELL. It really disturbs me.

Average location bad service f....
Terible experience with from frontdesk. Called one week before and arrange early check with the Frontdesk Manager. She were polite and helpful. When reach in the hotel morning after a long flight , found out there were no communication between them or the front desk lady not even want to check. Wanted to pay for early check in, front desk lady( Huang Chao Hua) rejected rudely. The bad face expression and tone of voice tell me she is fit for the position. The other guy from Maintanance shown understanding and care. He overheard our conversation with the lady and told her off.I ask her when her superior coming to work, she answer they are to busy to come.
The lift were jammed and we were more than 10 person stuck in there, the team solve the issue within 10 minute. I guess the maintainance team should give training to Frontdesk.

A fantastic location in a budg....
Should you be visiting GuangZhou and the cost of accommodation is a consideration, you might find this Hotel ideal. I have stayed at the starway and have also booked some friends in the hotel also. The hotel is located in East GuangZhou TienHe district. I find the area to be the best to say in. It is such a convenient area with so many restuarants, coffee shops, supermarkets and also it is an up-market area and I find it safe to stay. I remember a woman approach me a few years ago desperately wanting directions. With further conversation she told me about the hotel and area she was staying which she had booked through her travel agent prior to arriving in GuangZhou. I immediately booked her in to the Starway Dragon Pearl and she was incredibly delighted.
This is a budget hotel so don't expect any frills. It is basic but remember being in the best area means you can eat anywhere until late evening. From walking out of the hotel to your left at the end of the street about 300 meters you have Walmart supermarket and department store. Over the over-pass you have computer city. Should you walk across the road from the hotel you have convenience stores, a mall with restaurants and just over the road on your left on the corner you have a laundry service which I use each time I visit GuangZhou irrespective where I stay. Should you walk left, and walk towards the first major intersection you will find Watson's personal care store, pastry shops and over the lights Parkin Shop which a a very large supermarket and department store which is just going through the final stages of renovation.
It is a budget hotel which I would rate as a 3 star hotel and have never had any problems staying there. So for a budget hotel I would highly recommend it. It costs around AUD $40.00 per night per room.

Basic hotel in reasonable loca....
Basic hotel, the room was quite large, old but clean.
The reception spoke good English.
I found the location to be pretty good. I walked to the MTR about 5-7 minutes away. I think there are two stations within walking distance, make sure you are on the right side of the road or you will have to walk another large block to cross.
The sauna is terrible, not clean so don't go there.
I found some good restaurants around this place.
There are plenty of hotels in this area so if you don't have a booking walk around the area but the price may be better online than walkup. I would probably try elsewhere before coming again but it was not too bad.
