This is a small boutique hotel. The room is nice but a few issues. The drain didn’t work and the shower leaked. Room was clean and cleaned every day. It was it a great location and you could walk through the Hutong area and to the lake. The food in the restaurant wasn’t great - but there are lots of great options nearby. Overall a great day.

Amazing experience not to be m....
The highlight of my entire Beijing trip was definitely the shadow puppetry performance by Master Ma Zhong Bo and his team. It happens every tues/thurs/sat at 8pm and should not be missed. The hotel is beautifully decorated and our room was more than well-equipped for my friend and I. It was spacious, clean, with gorgeous windows that looked out to the foyer. The staff were always very helpful and the shower was always quick to heat, essential for cold winters in Beijing. The hotel is tucked away in the heart of the Hutong areas, close to schools and little shops so it's very safe. It is important to note though that it's a walk to the nearest station and there are stairs in the hotel that might not be ideal for people who have slight mobility issues. Taxis also don't find their way there all the time. But otherwise I would highly recommend a stay here. The staff were always helpful and friendly. Book early.

Great location to experience t....
This hotel feels like a hidden gem in the hutong area. I was really pleased with the amenities of this hotel. Fun little details like free treats on the bed and the full array of toiletry items. The room is small, but that was captured in other reviews. The sewer smell was the only remotely negative thing I would say about this hotel, but it would come and go. I would recommend having some sort of room freshener with you to help with the smell. But, don't let the smell deter you. The shadow art performances were a wonderful treat to experience an ancient Chinese art form. The breakfast provided was ample and had wonderful offerings each morning. I stayed here 4 nights so I really got to enjoy this hotel. The bacon is fantastic! The location of this hotel is one of its best features. An easy walk to a lake that is brimming with local activity. Fabulous people watching every where you look, and it changes according to time of day. I am happy that I got to experience a hutong, and felt safe walking there, even at night.

Unusal, Unforgetable Exprience
First impression on arrival at midnight was I do not know what to expect. However after checking in which was very efficient, our stay for 3 nights was exquisite, very relaxing. The staff were friendly and nothing was to difficult. Interesting in house activities , shadow puppets, how to make them , dumpling class added to a fantastic stay. Would definitely recommend and stay at Shichahai Shadow Art Performance Hotel again. Special thank you to Wendy at the front desk for making our stay very pleasant.

Luxury in a typical Chinese Hu....
he hotel was a completely reconstructed modern 2-story building with western style bathrooms and amenities and a helpfulstaff that all spoke mostly workable English. There was a good (if slightly repetitive) breakfast with Chinese buns and pastries and 2 kinds of eggs, bacon and sausage as well as vegetable salads and white toast. There was a shadow-puppet master who gave free shadow-puppet performances for guests in the glassed-in central courtyard/breakfast area. The hotel location was chosen to give a western-accessible hint of what it is like to live in a Hutong (narrow Chinese side street) which was typical of Beijing accommodations before the invasion of gorgeous modern architecture and many high-rise building. It was just a short walk to Lake Hou Hai and Lake Bei Hai, the Bell and Drum Tower; a relatively short DiDi ride (Beijing is huge) to Tiananmen Square, museum, Forbidden City. The narrow side streets were sometimes teeming with pedestrians, parked bikes and electric tricycles which made it tricky for taxis to navigate and about a third refused to go all the way to my hotel, dropping me off at the fringe of the Hutong about a block away. The DiDi (Chinese Uber) drivers were usually more accommodating though, and I recommend their service. I was able to buy fruit at a market down the block (in sign language). The locals were friendly and honest. The street was busy but I always felt safe. It got me a little closer to a taste of old China without any undue discomfort. In all a wonderful stay that met my tastes and needs perfectly.
