Great experience staying in a ....

The architecture and interior are lovely - definitely great for those who would like to experience staying in a 'hutong'. Place is clean and well kept. The room I stayed was small and basic, but reasonably comfy and cosy. As the rooms were converted from an old house, soundproofing is quite weak - if you bump into loud visitors it can be quite a turn off. The water heater in the bathroom isn't great as the water was either too hot or too cold due to unstable water pressure. Taxis can only reach the entrance of the Liuhe alleyway (hutong), and there is a 2-min walk to the hotel. Xisi subway station is walking distance from the hotel, it's a fairly easy 8-10 min walk. Overall, my stay was an enjoyable one. To manage expectations, this is definitely not as comfortable nor convenient as a typical hotel but if you're looking for a more unique and local experience, I'd still recommend this. P/s: there is also a furry and friendly resident cat who is extremely interested in food.

We stayed at his beautiful hutong during winter in Beijing and loved the typical classical old Chinese architecture. The hotel is located in the alleys and lanes behind a bunch of other old shops and houses. The hotel was quite easy to find if you follow the direction closely but if you get lost; it would be very difficult to find the hotel because nobody speaks English and googlemaps is banned in Beijing. The rooms were quite small or maybe because the rooms were decorated with extremely large old furniture. There was an old heater provided but the bathrooms are extremely cold during winter so we had to move their small portable heater into the bathroom. Their bathrooms are very tiny and probably needs a bit of upgrade like better shower systems or fixing their huge hole in the ceiling. Subway stations are nearby, there are many restaurants if you know where to find and commuting around is quite easy by foot as well. However, language is a barrier so print some pictures to show what you want to ask. Other than the little issues, the hotel is very beautiful during winter as the snow covers the roofs and definitely great for photography. For those who doesn't mind staying in a old hotel, this hotel is definitely recommended to experience the old age Chinese living.

Stay local, eat local, shop lo....

We arrived at the Xisi subway station and followed the instructions we'd been given. Fairly straightforward, just look for the public lavatory on the corner of the hutong. Then down some narrow laneways and there we were. Ring the bell and we're greeted and go inside. No they don't accept overseas credit cards so we paid with cash. We're shown to our Deluxe room. It's smaller then I expected, a bit dated, the safe doesn't work and there's a pervading musty small that I thought was damp but I think was Beijing's about to burst sewers. The bathroom is a bit cramped and the shower decides it's own pressure. The courtyard itself is the owner's garden. There's washing, a few bits and pieces, some tables and chairs and 2 kittens but look up and see the beautifully painted eaves and roof details. This is old Beijing, This is what those in charge have been bulldozing to the nth degree in Beijing and now there's little standing. These are the areas that the nouveau riche in China are paying large sums to buy, hopefully to retain, although I expect, to modernise. We loved it. We loved feeling local. We loved the square on the main road that turns into a exercise/ dance floor thing every evening and we joined in. We loved walking to the Merry Mart and buying groceries and being stared at 'cause we were different. We loved getting "home" every evening after pounding the streets for a day. The staff are great. Ivy is lovely and speaks good English and the others speak Englese which is better than my Chinglish. The stewed haws, like crab apples, were a nice surprise and very tasty. Okay, the hotel has it's shortcomings but if you want an experience that tells you you're in Beijing and nowhere else then this is a very good place to do it.

OK, this is lovely if you know....

This place was recommended to us and I think it would have been fine if we knew a little more what to expect. It is a traditional courtyard hotel within the steaming bowels of a traditional Hutong. That was neat. We like that. It was neat that the bathroom was sort of open air and we could hear the tinkle of our neighbors. It was neat that Coke and Beer were 5 Yuan in an honor box in the lovely courtyard. It was neat that the location was walkable to bunch of cool stuff. It wasn't neat that we had to pay cash and that western credit cards were a forbidden novelty. It wasn't that neat that the room was tiny and once our suitcase was open on the floor we had to leap from bed to bathroom to navigate within. The staff was friendly. There was a house kitten that was awesome. I'd stay here again perhaps because it was cheap but let's not kid ourselves that this is anything more than average. Probably less than that. The house kitten gives this a one star boost.

Peaceful hotel in quiet hutong....

Excellent place to stay as hotel is well-placed near Xisi subway stop (Line 4), about 5 minute walk. Area is marked with signs to the hotel, so had no issues finding it at all. Rooms and property are good for short or longer stays. We stayed here twice, 4 nights each time. Staff were great.
