Still the best place for a sta....

First time I came to this hotel in 2008 - it was operated by Kempinski and a great place for a long weekend at the wall. All buildings were fairly new and the staff provided an outstanding service. Since then a few things have changed! The property was sold and the new owners couldn't keep the standard! Don't take me wrong the buildings aren't bad, but you can see that maintenance isn't high on the priority list. Whats still outstanding is the private path to the great wall. In contrast to tourist places in Beijing, Xian, or even Badaling at the wall - you will be able to see the wall without thousands of people. It is remarkable quiet ... somewhat a unique experience.

Good location, a bit worn but ....

Stayed for 3 nights for a business conference. Overall rating is 3.5/5 Location: 3.5/5 - the hotel has private access to the Great Wall but the path is steep and not wheel chair friendly. Food: 3/5 - we had all the meals at the hotel as there is not much to go and explore, especially since we were in a group and it was snowing.Lunch / Dinner service and quality was good but breakfast left us wanting more variety. Rooms: 3.5/5 - A bit worn, due to the snow the sleet made it very slippery and risky and there was no warning on the first day - I almost slipped twice at the entrance and steps to my villa as there is no non slip mat placed. Our villa was huge but very basic. The bath had good toiletries, a good shower and was always clean. Internet speed was good but lacked a study desk in the bedrooms. Service: 3.5/5 - the staff were very friendly and always at hand to help but lacked the grasp of English even when I tried to explain slowly and trying to relate to them. The drivers were polite - there is transport available to drive from the villa to the main building as it was snowing on all the days we were there. Would I recommend to stay here? Yes, the location makes it worthwhile but only of you are fit to climb uphill. The private access to the wall makes it worth it.

Exceptional Location. Beautifu....

Wow. This is a bucket list experience which I will dream of for years to come. What an incredible concept brought to life in an amazing location. I loved every bit of my trip to the hotel and the private access to the wall was incredible. I went up a couple of times and was mostly the only person up there. Something I will never forget. The hotel was wonderful, staff were amazing and were exceptionally accommodating, always helping with a smile. Abel, a compliment to you and your team! Thank you for such a special weekend!

Go if you can speak Chinese on....

A few people told me how great this place is. However, all of them are from mainland China. Keep in mind that if you are a foreigner and you speak English you’re going to loose your temper quite easily. As I already told the concierge, our experience was extremely disappointing to me. At arrival, there were two girls at the reception and they couldn’t speak a word of English. It was literally IMPOSSIBLE to communicate and she was holding her phone all the time trying to say some words. I’m ok with the fact that people don’t speak English well, but at least the basic things like breakfast, room, Great Wall and water should be in their vocabulary. We arrived at night and we were exhausted. After a long and unsuccessful conversation, I asked them to talk to Carrie, the person I was exchanging emails with before our arrival. Carrie can speak English and his attitude was great. He was really willing to help, but unfortunately he was not in the hotel. We decided to try their restaurant for dinner and out of 7 waiters none could speak English and they kept laughing making us feel like aliens. (My Dad asked for water and they couldn’t understand). The most disappointing part was after dinner when we went back to the front office, hoping that our 5 big luggages would have been taken care of and brought to our room. Instead, They were still there and no one helped. The funny part is that there was no elevator and my parents had to carry very heavy luggages all the way up for three floors. I was speechless... unbelievable and unacceptable. Positive: -great private section of the Great Wall which is stunning -Carrie, the concierge -the manager To be honest, since I have told them how disappointed I was, I was expecting to get a discount or a form of understanding but nothing. I won’t go back and it’s not recommended. Such a pity for such a beautiful place!

Do not recommend

It all started wth the photos looking pretty good online and reality is the people working here made the experience so bad. I came with a group of 6 arrived at 8:30pm at the hotel, dinner was complimentary for the night and we walked into a almost empty restaurant but no tables were available because none of them were cleaned. It took them 30 minutes to clear a table of 6 for us and by the time we start, all the food from the buffet was gone and we had to ask them to bring out more food, soy sauce etc and last order was at 9:30pm Staff were unwilling to help, had to ask 5 times for soysauce and 3 times for water with very unimpressed attitude, one of them even sighed with we asked for water. We then headed to our room which is situated 800m from the reception where they arranged a car to send us up. When we asked about how our luggage will be sent, the receptionist told us they stop service at 11 and we were asked to carry our own luggage. Up and down the stairs. When we arrived the property, we were placed in a room at a basement with minimal amenities (2 bottles of water) and there is a couch and dining table at the common area, a kettle, with an empty fridge, some cups and some dirty dishes. With the price they listed, it is reasonable that people expect quality and service but there is NONE. Staff could be quite rude and super unwilling to help, refused to acknowledge what was agreed upon. The property is massive but minimum amenities, please be prepared if you are planning to visit.
