Blame the customer not the inc....

This hotel is set in a business district of Beijing and my wife and I did not find any eating places within the locality and therefore opted to eat in the hotel where we appeared to be the only two Western tourists. This was in no way a problem but illustrates that at this time of year at least the hotel is more used to dealing with people on business and attending conferences. On two nights we used the self service, buffet style cafe and on our third and final night opted for the special, 'Western style' dining experience in the revolving tower at the top of the hotel.The food in the self-service cafe was excellent, the staff friendly and efficient. The revolving restaurant experience was not so good - no wine list, despite asking for one so only warm water to drink. The starters arrived at very different times although I do understand that this is common in China - like soup arriving at the end of a meal not at the start! These and the main course were ok but really not much more than average. No one asked us if we wanted a desert or coffee so we decided to sack it off as a wrong, but very expensive choice on our part. I signed for our meals in triplicate and asked they be charged to our room, the one they already had the number of from our restaurant booking. We were about to get into the lift when the waitress came and called us back and told us to sit down and wait 'Two minutes'. She duly returned and told us we would need to pay for our meal there and then because we did not have enough 'Deposit left in your account'. I queried what she meant as no one had ever asked me for a deposit on our account either in cash or by taking a credit card reference and as far as I was concerned it was being added to my room bill and I would pay for all additional meals when checking out. Not satisfied with this she again told us to 'Stay there' and summoned the deputy manager. He went through the same scenario and I repeated that no one had asked me for a deposit in cash or by credit card. I further explained that as I only wanted to be charged one credit card fee I was willing to pay for all the meals we had taken now or, as I had intended, on checking out the following day. I did ask why there was a problem because on the previous two evenings when dining in the self-service restaurant I had done exactly as this evening, in signing in triplicate for food and drinks taken. He either did not listen, did not want to or did not understand because he insisted I paid for the meals we had just taken. I asked for the manager who duly came and we went through by what was now, for me becoming a very boring repertoire. The manager suggested that our tour agents had booked us in wrongly but I corrected him on this. I explained that we had done nothing differently tonight compared to the previous two in the manner in which we had checked into cafe/restaurant, eaten and signed for food. I also told him that no one asked me for a credit card reference on checking in and that in hotels all over the world I added extras to my account and settled on checking out - standard practice. He seemed surprised we had done this, told us to 'Wait there' and went off for several minutes, returning to tell us there was no record of our having eaten in the self-service cafes. By this point my wife was becoming very distressed so I reminded the manager that the hotel had copies of our passport, details of our tour arrangements and knew which room we were in and has we had been detained for over 15 minutes, we were leaving, but before we did so I would either pay now for all the meals taken over three days or tomorrow on departure, it was up to him. He did not accept either offer, still wanting us to pay just for the meals taken that evening. We left, went to our room and recomposed ourselves before going downstairs to reception where we explained to the assistant manager that we had had a problem and wanted to pay our bill now, ahead of our departure the next day. She claimed not to speak English and so got.... the manager. I outlined to him what I expected to pay for and after another wait whilst he made 'phone calls he was finally able to produce a bill that was an accurate account of what we owed for the meals we had taken. Clearly the hotel has issues to address such as why we were not asked for a credit card on arrival and why the problem that ensued was not a problem on the first two nights. The manner in which the manager handled the issue, in a public area and at all times blaming the customer for the problems and not recognising or understanding shortcomings of hotel staff and systems was deplorable. It is not a hotel that I would return to or could recommend to other tourists.

Very enjoyable stay!

The hotel is very nice! Not quite a 5-star, but maybe it will be when the renovations are complete. Great location in terms of access to Beijing's wonderful subway system; only one block to the subway station at the Beijing Railway Station. Location is not so great in terms of proximity to restaurants or shops. The former shopping centre across the street is closed. The hotel is being renovated, but we were in an older room that was nice enough. Very comfortable bed, nice view of the courtyard garden. Restaurants in the hotel were very good and we especially enjoyed the revolving restaurant. The pool is a swimmer's dream! It is 35 metres long, so it is great for lap swimming. It has four lanes, not very busy at all and free for hotel guests. Bathing caps are mandatory.

Good location

This is a centrally located hotel. The room is clean and a good size with breakfast having a wide variety. Only downside is cards which get pushed under your door offering “women for hire”. This happened on more than one occasion but saying this, never harassed by anyone in anyway, no one dodgy hanging about, a very safe and pleasant hotel.

Bathroom needs updating

Hotel is in a decent location, walking distance to a large mall, shopping areas, and two subway stops. My only complaint is that the bathroom needs's old, doesn't look very clean. The rest of the room looked modern/updated though. Breakfast buffet had a wide selection of food, and there are a variety of (pricy) restaurants in the hotel to choose from as well if looking for lunch/dinner options.

Beautiful 5 stars hotel in Be....

Attentive staff, who actually spoke and understood English! Very clean, nice decor, great amenities, close to KFC, and a few stores. Bathrooms were huge, all you needed in a full service hotel. Very busy hotel, but so spacious that you don"t feel crowded. Ask for anything, and it would be delivered promptly. I recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Beijing. Thanks for such awesome service!
