The Galerias remains something....
By my reckoning this was my 32nd visit to Santiago and at least my 20th to the Galerias, where I stayed for the first time, as a guest of the Chilean Air Force, in 1986. It says a lot in its favour that, in spite of en enforced stay of ten weeks, in 2002, after I broke my ankle on the second of what was intended to be a ten day stay, it continued to be my favourite hotel in Santiago, until, alas, a new and misguided management decided to convert what was a top class international hotel into an "ethnic" one.
I have nothing against ethnic hotels or restaurants and indeed often seek out the latter. Unfortunately, the "ethnicization" of the Galerias involved the abandonment of such international frivolities as the almost universal door-hanging tickets to order room-service breakfast - a minor irritation but an irritation nevertheless. More serious was the replacement of the existing, international standard front desk management by a more-or-less user-hostile "ethnic" one. Even more serious still, was the replacement of the international, gourmet standard, restaurant menu by a limited and in many cases vastly inferior one. Not all hotel guests want an exclusively "ethnic" diet!
Service declined and the international standard maitre'd and bar manager both left in quick succession, followed by most of the old staff.
After suffering this for a couple of years, I moved my custom elsewhere and returned to the Galerias, experimentally, only relatively recently.
I was agreeably surprised, during my most recent visit, at the beginning of April 2018, that with the exception of the restaurant, of which more anon, everything, especially service, had improved out of all proportion and returned, if not fully, to something approaching its former glory. I was therefore not surprised to discover that there had been a change in management.
The otherwise almost universal improvements had, alas, not extended to the restaurant, formerly one of the best and most popular in central Santiago, which was almost empty on both my visits and where both the variety and the quality of the food had declined to the totally unacceptable. The execrable quality of the food was if anything exceeded by the abysmal and indeed "user-hostile" service, not helped by the fact that the maitre'd disappeared at an early stage of our meal. As a further example, a junior waiter, having served my two guests and myself with the second bottle of one of the most expensive wines on the wine-list and pocketed an excessively generous tip, attempted, unsuccessfully, to eject us from the dining room at the totally unacceptable hour of 11 pm. This young gentleman, by name "Caleb", has obviously made the wrong career choice.
The dining experience left an extremely bad impression which came close to off-setting that created by the otherwise universal improvements. Hopefully, the new management will deal with it as effectively as it has done with the other aspects of the hotel.

Much better than I anticipated....
Before our trip when I did the research, I have reservation of staying at Hotel Galerias. Due to lack of better options in terms of location and cost, we went ahead and make the booking. Now I have to say I am glad we stayed there. I was presently surprised by everything. Staff are helpful. Room is clean. Bed is comfortable (the most comfortable bed I had for the whole month in South America). Breakfast is great with a lot of varieties. Not all staff can speak English but the staff at reception and the restaurant speak good English. I would be more than happy to stay at Hotel Galerias on my next visit.

Nice Tourist Hotel in Santiago
We stayed here as part of an agent organized vacation package. Nice 3 star hotel with the basic amenities expected - Restaurant (we only had breakfast here but it was well used at dinner hours); bar with inside and outside service, pool etc. Very friendly and helpful hotel and bar staff. Very good breakfast with lots of choices of breads, cereals, hot and cold eggs, meat, cheeses and good selection of fresh fruits. Lots of local business travellers here, so reputation must be good. We needed adaptors for North American plugs and the hotel provided them for us at no fee. Centrally located not far from the Mercardo Centrale, the Santiago Metro and restaurants. We would stay there again.

Safe city centre choice
Perfectly decent but unexceptional hotel. Our room was fine, with a nice comfortable bed. It was a bit noisy - even on the 7th floor, above the swimming pool, traffic was obvious - but nothing earplugs wouldn't cure. The hotel restaurant sounds very nice in the hotel publicity, but the food is actually pretty bog-standard. We didn't experience breakfast (leaving for airport at crack of dawn), but there was coffee and pastries in the foyer for early-leavers.
