I wasn't expecting this to be ....
The room was dark and dank, with the only view from my window being the grey wall of the hotel next door. The staff were indolent and generally rude. The area at least was nice but alternated between hipster tourist chic and extreme poverty.
The worst part was that we were unable to sleep well a single night during our stay. There was a near-constant loud shrill coming from the walls, sometimes lasting for minutes, sometimes for seconds. I know it doesn't sound that bad but it really starts to drive you mad after a while, like listening to a loud mosquito in the dark for hours or having really bad tinnitus. Every night was a struggle to get to sleep (even with earplugs) and then I would just be woken at around 5AM. The staff reacted like we were just being fussy foreigners and basically shrugged it off.
One morning I decided to follow the sound to see if I could find where it was coming from. It led me down the hallway to a small room next to the elevators with access to water pipes. My husband realised this sound must then be caused by bad water pressure. I later went to let the staff know about this and they once again showed no concern. This made me quite angry but at this point we were leaving that evening so I decided to stop trying to fix it.
Overall I would recommend staying away, while the neighbourhood can have its moments and Santiago is full of great places, this is a horrible place that will just sour your whole experience of the city.

Great Location, BUT a Few Issu....
I booked Lastarria Suites due to it's central location, and indeed it was a great location. Unfortunately it went downhill from there. I arrived later in the evening, and the security guard at the door informed me that the office for Lastarria Suites was closed, but called someone who came down, gave me a key and pointed me in the direction of the building in the complex that I needed to go ...no check-in, no information, and didn't even tell me where the office was. When I got to the suite I liked the kind of retro look, despite it being a bit tired. The view was also great, and I liked the layout of the suite, but again unfortunately it went downhill from there. The linen on the bed, although clean, was stained, and a bit off-putting. The toilet was also running non-stop. The next day I went to turn on the TV, only to find out that it didn't work. I went down to the security to ask where the office was so I could have some of those issues addressed, only to be informed that the office was again closed. The next day when I went to check out in the morning, I was informed again that the office was closed. I asked if I could leave the key with the security guard, but he said he couldn't take it, so I had to go back up into the suite and leave the key inside. All in all, despite the great location, it seemed very disorganized and made for a rather disappointing stay.

We booked the suites for a few days.
The location, yes is good, there is a supermarket right next door which helps.
The apartment itself was dusty. We didn't feel comfortable sleeping in the bed due to what looked like bugs (not bed bugs) so we ended up buying multiple shower curtains from the supermarket and laying those over the couch (which itself was dusty and old). The carpet was old as well. I wouldn't dare walk barefoot in one of these units.
The troubling part, on both entry and exit, the girls who manage the place for their 'boss' tried to say we owed them funds because the online payment was just a booking fee. Ridiculous. They tried to charge us again for the unit?
We stood our ground and refused. It caused unnecessary stress.
I wouldn't use the plates, glasses, chairs that were there either.
If you can manage the above it might be a cheap place. We paid $75 pesos or so .

Avoid in the heat
Although this place has a fantastic location and is very well priced, I can't recommend it for the summer months. When we went into our room the portable air conditioner showed the room had a temperature of 33 degrees. It took all night for the temperature to come down to a reasonable level. The following afternoon it was just as hot. We fled to a hotel with air conditioning.

Disappointing in many ways
We thought we had booked a hotel, so were surprised when we went to checkin. The security guard handed us an envelope which contained the combination to a lock on a room which he told us was two buildings away. There is no reception. We only found out who the manager of out apartment was from another guest we spoke to in the lift. These appartments are a few rented units in a large residential block, and other units had dogs barking, babies crying, cooking smells etc. When we came back to our room after the first day we found all of our luggage gone. After much chasing around we found that we had been moved to another room without being told. All of our stuff had been dumped, unpacked, inside the second room. When we went to talk to the manager, she told us she didn't manage our new room and didn't know who did (we never did find out).
You could not really call the appartments 'self contained'. We had one saucepan which had no handles so couldn't be handled when hot, a microwave but no containers that could be used in it, a few plates but no bowls. The queen bed had a bottom sheet, but on top were 2 single sheets, one across the top and one across the feet, but a gap in the middle! The floor was so filthy that within 5 minutes of having a shower my feet soles were black.
The worst part about the place was the attitude of staff. I have never encountered anywhere where every single employee we met cared so little about doing their job or trying to help in any way.
On the plus side, this was a very central location.
