Basic but nice!
Recently stayed here for 4 nights. I had a basic room for one with a shared bathroom. There was hot water and room was clean and fine. The ladies (family owned) were kind and attentive. Breakfast was basic but good. The location is not far from nor in the center of town...its only a 10 minute walk if you don't mind....which I didn't at all.

Total rip off. Stay away!
First off, the pros: the room was clean and the shower was good.
Now for the cons: 42,000 pesos a night for a basic twin room with private bathroom. It's a good walk from the town centre. The owner was condescending and at times rude. The breakfast was AWFUL, with a slice of plastic ham per person, one roll each of stale bread, and a packet of Nescafé, none of which we actually ate because it was too horrible looking. We were very glad we had our own porridge. The kitchen was dirty and had no cooking utensils. We asked for plates and bowls, which hadn't been provided in the first place only to find they were being kept in a locked cupboard, to which we hadn't been given a key!
We'd booked two nights but decided to leave after one and luckily got our money back. We found a hostel up the road, much closer to the centre, with exactly the same room quality but with shared bathroom for 20,000 pesos, showing that there's no need to stay here unless it's the last room in town. Even then, maybe make friends with a local and crash on their couch! We've travelled all over Chile and this is the worst value hostel we've stayed in. In fact, the worst value accommodation we've ever stayed in!

A nice and clean hostel with a....
My girlfriend and I stayed at Hostal Vilama for 4 nights in January 2012. The hostel is extremely clean and quiet and offers free WiFi. The staff is kind and helpful, but they speak only Spanish. The owner came and picked us up at the bus station for free and even drove us back on our last day. The cleaning lady not only cleaned the room but also folded my clothes and put them in the closet, when I left them on my bed after catching the 4AM geysers tour. Some people might find this disturbing. Breakfast was a bit poor and included only the usual bread (exactly 2 pieces per person), butter and jam. Another downside of this hostel is its location. You have to walk around 7 minutes to reach the center of San Pedro, where the majority of restaurants, bars and tour agencies are located. This may not sound much, but in the scorching atacamenian heat this may become strenuous if you have to do it a couple of times a day. I would recommend this hostel if tidiness is one of your primary concerns and don't mind walking to the center in the heat.

Stay in mai/2012
The price of the apartment was not so cheap(there are OTHER options sanpedro), the cleaning was good, location 10 minutes Caracoles St.. But we were treated with extreme suspicion, watched everything we did.The heat only works 4 hours a day (pay additional hour used). We have been accused of breaking the heating of the apartment. Not one call was made by the owners to confirm the transfer of Licancanbur(we pay more than US$ 350).Earn money, restriction, surveillance are synonyms of our stay.

Good place to stay
The hostel is runned by two very friendly and helpfull sisters and is set in a very quiet part of San Pedro. We booked by email (in English) and that was no problem. The rooms are very clean and there is a good hot shower. There is wi-fi. In the backyard there is a little kitchen where breakfast is served, and where you can prepare your food, if you want. The hostel is about 600 meters from the mainstreet with all the shops and restaurants. In winter time there is a heater, which will be switch on and off by the owner of the hostel. The owner of the hostal, Angelica, can also give you information about trips and restaurants. She can also arrange taxi transport from and to the airport (Calama). The hostel is indeed great value for money.
