Great hotel with a superb spa.

My husband and I stayed at the Rila for a cheap skiing holiday this Easter. We booked through Balkan Holidays who were very good. The Rila is a lovely hotel and I would definitely recommend it. It has been refurbished to a very high standard. Our room was lovely and spotlessly clean. We were lucky enough to be put in a car park view room over looking the Samakov hotel and not a piste view room. It was so peaceful round the side of the hotel and we had uninterrupted sleep for our entire stay. Where-as people who had piste view rooms heard a lot of noise from clubs and bars and stray dogs. The room was lovely and warm. The spa was spectacular and the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. There are about 5 saunas, a steam room, a turkish bath, two heated marble beds to lye on and a cryo chamber. It was never crowded down there and it was all included in the price for the hotel. There was a Russian bath, but I think it was closed. The pool is huge and is heated to 28 degrees, so even though it feels a bit fresh when you first get in, it is perfectly warm enough once you get going. The two jacuzzi's are just the right temperature. It was one of the best hotel spa's I have ever been in. We were half board. The food was exceptional. Free water with dinner doesn't seem like much, but it soon adds up in the resorts where you have to pay for it. No coffee with dinner though and my husband missed that as we had that in Lapland. And no tea, coffee, cups or a kettle in the room either which is a bit strange. No fridge either, so we couldn't buy anything that needed chilling from the supermarket. Another lady in my skiing class said that she reported children licking the food and then putting it back in the serving dishes and licking the serving spoons to the dining room staff. They said they would report this to management, but when she asked management what was happening about it they didn't know anything about it. This I think is more of a bad parenting issue than a hotel issue. The dining room staff were very friendly and like the spa staff, they were keen to help us with our Bulgarian as we always tried it out on them every day. Much to their amusement I think! The male bar man was the only surly member of staff in the whole place. He had 3 other people to serve when we got down there, but you'd think he was in a heaving pub on a Friday night in London. He was stressed off his brain. He took our order and then went and served 4 new people who arrived after us. The very helpful bar lady asked us if we were okay and we said he had taken our order so she went and served some other people. 10 minutes later she realised he was ignoring us completely and was not going to bring our order, so she came and served us herself. And the ski hiring arrangement was a bit of a nightmare, but that is probably not a hotel thing. I think Borosports hire the space downstairs to run their operation from. The men are stroppy and stressed out. You are not told that you can move down to any of the counters, so everyone queued behind counter number 1 and the man there got more and more aggressive. It soon transpired that you have to give your ski's in at the end of each day and go through the entire process every single morning. I couldn't believe it. The thought of going through all that 5 more times. My boots were too small and the man just shrugged at me and said "what? what?" Another lady was in tears on day 2 as he was accusing her of lying about which boots she had. It was really awful. Please put in some lockers like all the other resorts do. And if there are already lockers, advertise where they are. We looked and we were told there were no lockers, you just hand in your stuff every day. I finally got different boots on day 3 when my instructor insisted on it. On a non Rila hotel note, be aware that if you are at different levels of ability to the people you have gone with, you will all be separated for 6 hours a day. Not our idea of a good time. You will not be allowed to even have lunch together. Even children are made to have lunch with their group and not with their parents. I saw children sitting in-front of ridiculous plates of food looking sad and confused. It put us off lessons to the extent where we have just booked our next skiing holiday and for the first time in 5 holidays we are not having any lessons. Most of the couples we spoke to who had been separated due to ability felt the same way. People go on holiday to be together and share the experience and they should at least be able to have lunch together. If you're a beginner or improving beginner and are having lessons, ask for Tseko who was excellent. Very friendly and always there to push or pull you along. All in all, a great hotel.

Excellent for relaxing

We visited this hotel during low season. The pricing was extremely reasonable only 50 euros including the spa facilities.the spa was extremely good with very good steam bath, Turkish bath, sauna and an Olympic dimensions pool. The breakfast was extremely delicious and also the finger food on the bar restaurant was very good

Relaxing

First family skiing holiday and it couldn't have gone much better. No long queue to check in and out, nice refurbished room, great food and lovely pool facilities. Had a 2nd floor car park view but didn't mind as we were busy all the time. No loud noises outside (quiet I suspect being late in season - 2nd to last week) and slept with door open a couple of nights (rooms warm). Shower good - be careful as spray can go everywhere and fill tray area very quickly. Bars were great and drink prices comparable.

Last orders.

I’d have liked this hotel if it wasn’t for the perpetually wood smoke that fills your room morning, noon and night, rooms that are so hot you can’t sleep and you can forget a nights sleep with the door open as you can hear every street fight, stray dog scrap and constant noise from the bars 24/7. If you have a mountain facing room the noise levels bouncing off the mountain and the hotel front are rediculous. From Reception through to bar, spa, restaurant, ticket office. In one week I’ve had eyes rolled and huffs from every department from George in the spa who couldn’t wait to get rid of me, the ticket lady who huffed and slammed around and the bar staff who seemed absolutely disgusted at having to get you a drink. The housekeepers couldn’t be nicer and Stanislava was a real help on every communication and was a real asset. This hotel has been beautifully refurbished and looks great. But at the end of season don’t expect the casino, hairdressers, nail bar, restaurants to be open. We had mediocre food in the evening buffet that was included in the rate, breakfast was ok. The bar closes at 11pm on the dot. We were one of many groups probably 70 people in the bar who were refused service even though 12am is the advertised time. The food in the terrace bar was nice but the waiting staff just seemed annoyed at every request, when your waiter is finished shift it’s pay up time. The skiing in the resort is now over and the slopes are fine for a family holiday, but Borovets is very shabby, there are no quaint restaurants or shops and if I come back to Bulgaria... it’s Bansko every time.
