Does the job
Elysia hostel is barebones, but it does the basics well.
The room we stayed in was immaculately clean, as was the en suite bathroom. The beds were comfortable, it was very quiet and the couple who owned it were very kind, made us free coffee etc. There is a pharmacy and mini-supermarket about a minute away as well, so you don't go hungry too easily!
The location is a short walk from town, with a few bars in the neighborhood, it is not the most ideal part of the city but the go-to places are with walking distance (10-15 minutes). If you're legs can't carry you so far there is a metro stop one block away (3 minute walk).
If you are looking for a hostel to provide some fun and meet people this is probably not for you, if you are looking for a comfortable stay and good sleep for some energy to enjoy the day, then book!

Friendly, cosy and quiet.
Basic, clean facilities.
I found it conveniently located. Train station, bus terminal and city all reachable on foot.
When I arrived from the airport late in the evening, I found it a little bit hard to find at first. The house is set back from the street, kind of in the back/side yard of another house, behind a fence. A friendly local person in the street helped me find it.
Thank you for a good stay.

We booked three nights and stayed only one. We didn't like either the hostel or the neighbourhood (scruffy and quite a trek to the area with the main attractions.) The room was overpriced for what was offered - no fan or air-con, an over-bed light with exposed wiring, no glasses/toothmugs; there was even a charge for a bath towel. We also felt it was misdescribed online in that it said 'access to garden'. OK, if walking through the garden to the front door is 'access' we had it but there was only one table which was used by the family.

I see that this is the first review of this hostel in around nine months. I wonder then, whether standards have declined since the last reviewer stayed as unfortunately I cannot be very positive about this hostel.
We arrived mid afternoon on a hot Sunday. The hostel is indeed walkable from the train station and up a quiet street. That said, it is not actually in a particularly good location for the sites in central Sofia. They are walkable but not very close. I would also not recommend this area to single women travellers at night.
Having seen pictures of a garden on Hostelworld, we hoped to be able to sit in it. Unfortunately though there was only one table, which was occupied by the family. All we had access to was a very basic bright yellow room comprising of two hard beds, WIFI, towels we could hire and a table that it appeared a child had drawn on. There was no fan, which wasn’t great as it was hot although weirdly there was also a radiator. There was a bathroom, which was okay and a better standard than the rundown nature of the rest of the room. Contrary to what we had been promised, there was also no tea or coffee facilities. Our room faced the front gate and at night, we were treated to a lot of noise and lights as people entered. I assume we were the only guests staying as I never saw anyone else, but in any case given there is no common space at all for guests this would be a very poor place to meet people. Also, given that the room was so basic, we didn’t want to spend any time in it at all other than for sleeping. And for this, we were charged 32 euros a night, which we had to pay in cash. In comparison with other places we have stayed and were to stay later on this journey, this was very poor value for money.
We decided to change our plans and told the owner that we would therefore be leaving the following day. I completely understand that people have different ideas of standards and they look for different things. I am not a serial complainer, and have left many good reviews for other places. Unfortunately though, Hostel Elysia is not somewhere about which I can be positive and right now, I would not recommend it as a place to stay.

ideal place to visit Sofia
The place was very clean, cosy and tidy. Our hosts were very friendly and helpful. The room is air-conditioned, so even the low temperatures in winter were no problem at all. The place is very close to the city centre in a very quiet street. After all, the ideal place to visit Sofia, highly recommended.
