Looks are deceiving and stars ....
My friend and I checked in to The Best Western Royal Hotel 4 stars, Plovdiv, 6 Belgrad Str. Situated in the centre of Plovdiv.
The hotel was selected by us from a list we were provided by our travel agent. And we hoped 4 stars would give us a good experience. Thus we started on our worst hotel experience in Bulgaria, 4 stars notwithstanding. The first issue was stairs. There was an unexpected step between the doorway and the check-in desk and I almost fell on my face; there were stairs to get to the elevator from the desk and no railing. There were stairs where one would not expect them.
When I got to my room I was amazed at the huge size, and that I had two rooms; but there were no drawers in the bedroom, and the other room, with the drawers, had a very weak light and a windowed wall looking at offices, so I had to draw the drapes, giving me little light, or choose to be seen. The bathroom had a stall shower and was tiny. The safe provided was so small it did not even hold a wallet.
No matter; I was ready to wash some undies, wash my hair, and have a shower. First, there was no stopper for the sink. When I asked for one later, I was given one that did not fit. Second, I could find no bath mat, so I put down a towel. I stepped into the shower, and to my horror, discovered that two of the shower doors did not budge. So I had to shower and do my hair holding the shower head very close to my body to avoid splashing the entire room. Then, wrapped in towels, I looked for the hair dryer. (I had contacted each hotel before we left to be sure I did not have to pack a hair dryer.) NO hair dryer.
I called down and made a fuss; I was assured someone would be right up with a hair dryer and a mat. I asked for a woman; a man delivered the hair dryer and another towel.
I got ready to meet my friend for dinner, expecting to have a tale of woe to tell; but she had a worse tale. Her room reeked of sewer gas from the plumbing. We had to wait for morning to reach our guide, so we just went in to the restaurant at the hotel. The first thing we noticed was the TV set, focus for a family at one table and the entire wait staff. We chose a meal and were disappointed with mediocre food from a list of which many things were not available. And so to bed. But it was not over. Lying in my double bed, I could feel every spring in the mattress. I solved it by getting the extra blanket, doubling it, and putting it under the sheet on one side of the bed. The next day my friend was transferred to a wing where she had a suite, but no elevator service. I chose to stay when I was assured that the staff, unable to change my mattress, would put down blankets as a pad for my bed. (When I returned that night, the blanket was where I left it, on half the bed.)
