An Enjoyable Week at Hotel Vil....

The Hotel Vila Rica is a great no-frills establishment quite adequate for travelers who don't require the bells and whistles of a luxury hotel. Conveniently located near the quiet Campo Grande square and two blocks from the Sheraton Hotel, the Hotel Vila Rica is in Salvador's upscale Corredor da Vitória neighborhood, midway between and not far from the city's historic center and the in-town beach area known as Barra. My room had a refrigerator stocked with complimentary bottled water, an air conditioner (quite necessary for Salvador's hot and humid climate), a safe, a hair dryer, and a large flat-screen TV. Ample soap is provided in the bathroom, but guests should bring their own shampoo. Besides the complimentary in-room WiFi, there are two computers for use by guests in the lobby. I enjoyed beginning my day with the hotel's ample breakfast, which is included in the daily rate. The buffet offers not only the standard scrambled eggs, cereal, coffee, tea, and breads, but also a variety of tropical fruits and juices as well as savory and sweet regional fare. If you don't want to make the trek to the beach, you can enjoy the hotel's small swimming pool and large deck, perfect for relaxing and sunbathing. I found the hotel staff to be very courteous and attentive. In one instance, when the land line phone system was temporarily down, the manager graciously offered me his cellphone to make a call. This was my third stay at Vila Velha. I look forward to returning the next time I come to Salvador.

Average and expensive World Cu....

Villa Vehla is basically a budget hotel priced at 4*+ rates during football World Cup ! My room was really basic with really cheap furniture. Most “funny” thing about it was the total lack of soundproofing between my bathroom and neighbour’s one (fortunately occupied by a mate of mine). I’ve never seen that, it was like having a wall made of paper! Like most places I stayed at in Brazil, front desk staff showed limited English knowledge and breakfast buffet was just average. Location is not bad, 5-10 minutes by taxi from nice areas like Barra, Rio Vermelho or Pelourinho and it’s very easy to catch a cab down the street.

Great location, but wouldn't r....

Let me start out that I had hard time deciding between two and three starts for my rating. My brother and I were going to Salvador for the World Cup and booked a hotel as soon as we got tickets over seven months ago. We looked for a place that was convenient to the stadium and the sites we wanted to see, mainly the historic district. TripAdvisor showed a 4-star rating for this hotel and generally happy reviews, and the price was much much better than most other hotels, about R$380 Brazilian ($170 US) per night. We arrived late at night taking a 1.5 hour bus ride from the airport. The bus is only R$2.80, whereas a taxi is R$120. Most of the drive was through some pretty rough neighborhoods so it was hard to know what the area around the hotel would be like. In fact it's gorgeous. That stretch of Av. Sete de Septembro is a tree-lined heaven mostly filled with very expensive and beautiful condo apartments. The buildings on the west side of the street sit upon a cliff that overlooks the water. A minute walk south will bring you to a geology museum and an art museum. The front of the hotel is good looking and welcoming, so we had high hopes when we walked in. That all changed when we went to our room The room is probably the most ghetto hotel room I've ever stayed in. 1-star motels in the US would be better. What it is is tiny, basic, relatively clean and functional. We had two beds, a double and a twin and there was barely room to even walk around. The window had a view of the wall of the adjacent building about 5 feet away. We couldn't see the street, the sky, anything other than the wall. In the room was also a good air conditioner, a small fridge, small flat-screen TV on the wall, dusty built-in shelves for your clothes (no closet or drawers and there were some bottles of weird purple liquid on the top shelves), a tiny table with two plastic chairs. The bathroom was small as well, but had pretty much everything you needed including a hair dryer. There is WiFi in the rooms, but it's very spotty and goes in and out all the time. They have different networks and I was constantly switching between them. What it didn't have was more than one light in the room, a safe, a microwave, a working telephone, a clock. The beds weren't very comfortable, and for some reason they used a flat sheet as the bottom sheet on the double bed so it never stayed tucked in. There are times you just want to hang out in your room and relax, but I couldn't stand being in the room. If you are on a budget and don't care about the room as long as it's clean, you'll be fine. I don't need much, but this wasn't good enough. There is a decent free breakfast in their restaurant, and I did get a nice dinner there one night. There is also a pool in the back which is quite nice to sit around and eat your meal, have some drinks or just lay out. But it's not big enough to swim in, more about just cooling off in. In our stay there we never saw anyone go into the pool. My biggest problem was that you only get one key for the room which you leave at the front desk when you leave the hotel. When you come back you just ask for they key by the room number. Nobody asks for you name or any identification. They just hand the key over to you. I could have asked for anyone's room key and they would have handed it over. When I told them our room didn't have a safe, they offered to put an envelope of my stuff in their hotel safe, but there's no way I would have trusted that someone else couldn't eventually ask for and receive it. There are some big problems with the hotel, but there was a lot good about it, mainly the location. You're halfway between Barra (beaches, shops, bars and restaurants) and Pelourinho (the historic district). It's completely walkable to both areas. In the end, it worked out for us, but only because nothing was stolen from our room. I really would not recommend this place to most people.

Great location. Ótima localiza....

It's far away from the airport, we spent almost 2 hours by bus, which costs R$2,80. My friend paid R$107,00 for taxi. The hotel is clean, the breakfast is very good. The bedroom is small, there's a TV, an old air conditioner (it works, so..), a wardrobe (with safe), a mini-bar with beverages. The bathroom is good, but their soap and shampoo are poor, so bring yours. There are a lot of bus passing in front of the hotel. There is a McDonald's at the end of the street (5 minutes by foot).

Loved this hotel!!

We first arrived at the Vila Velha tired and disoriented. As I FELL out of the cab and sprawled at the feet of the commissionaire, they must have wondered!! But I was picked up, whisked into the comfortable foyer, sat down very firmly and told to "stay" in sign language, while other hands retrieved my bags. My Portuguese is a joke, and the Vila Velha doesn't seem to get many English-speaking guests, but they are very nice to the ones they do have. The room was clean, fairly basic, the twin beds comfortable. Extras we asked for were provided cheerfully and promptly. The bathroom was good, beautiful white cotton towels with the hotel name woven in. But it was the breakfast buffet- and the staff- that really won my heart. My sister and I came to Bahia from 5-star accommodation in Sao Paolo, but were still impressed with the breakfast at the Vila Velha. The open-air dining-room is bright and welcoming, the food sufficiently varied from day to day to avoid boredom but always retaining the essentials-divine coffee, beautiful fruit, a fresh white cheese whose name I don't know, bread and cake and cold cuts and fruit juice. And the staff-wow!! courteous, patient, helpful. I think they appreciated our efforts to use Portuguese, and we found that our attempts to order a dinner one evening were greatly helped by our waiter. He COULD have just sold us two orders of soup, but he knew the serve was immense, and he persuaded us to take just one. We could help ourselves to bread and butter, we could have bottomless "cafe leite", he would be surprised if we finished one "canja brasileira". He was right, of course, and as I stumbled through asking for the bill he gently corrected my pronunciation then showed me the book he was reading behind the desk. At least one of the staff at the Vila Velha is learning English!!
