A stay to remember!!
Thank god for trip advisor, and for this phenomenal recommendation.
We absolutely LOVED Rita & Peter. It's not everyday you meet such kind, gracious and hospitable people. They took great care of us, tended to everything we pointed to and even more, to things we didn't even think about.
The rooms we were given (a bedroom and a living room) were beautiful! Rita designed them herself, as she did the rest of the house, piece by piece, and Peter painted a lot of the walls and furniture so they'd look like marble. It looked gorgeous, very vintage and cozy. But moreover - the rooms were so indulging, it was a pleasure just staying in.. we were almost tempted to spend our entire vacation inside.'ll l
The rooms were equipped with almost anything you could think of (amenities wise), had a great, comfortable bed, good wi-fi, air conditioning etc.
The living room space had a minibar, and Rita kept surprising us with snacks and beers and water. I haven't seen anything like this.
The breakfast was rich, fresh and versatile. Rita asked us everyday for our preferences, which isn't exactly standard procedure. But not only that - knowing we're supposed to go to a rock festival for the rest of each day, she made sure we took whatever was left to go with us (and believe me - there was PLENTY). There were fresh pastries, eggs to one's liking, different sausages and cheeses everyday, home-made jams, freshly squeezed juice, hot coffee and tea etc.
The neighborhood was quiet and lovely, and it took us 10 minutes, tops, to walk to the center of Mechelen or to a free parking spot (Rita would probably love to show you the way).
All in all - Probably the best B&B I have ever stayed in. I would love to go back to Mechelen, if only to visit this exquisite place and see Rita and Peter again.
Thank you for an amazing time. We will Never forget it.

SPOILED at B&B De Lachende Eng....
Extra-ordinary care with daily treats for guests -- should be listing as a SPOILING B&B -- ironed sheets so you're too spoiled to want to get out of the bed -- treats like but Not limited to champagne and award winning local beers, homemade cookies, an array of delicious local cheeses -- pleasant informative innkeepers who give you inside advice on what's around to enjoy, translate if you need it, make phone calls wherever you ask -- oh, and painted angels dropping rosebuds in a marble oversized bathroom with a clawfoot tub -- AND a very lovely rooftop garden where you can enjoy the champagne and beers, etc -- just to name a few things that absolutely SPOIL the guests.

A BED AND BREAKFAST TO RIVAL A....
We are an American couple traveling through Belgium and The Netherlands. We love staying at high quality, comfortable, and friendly B&Bs. We chose B&B De Lachende Engel after reading all the reviews on Trip Advisor. They were all true. This has been one of the nicest B&Bs we have ever stayed in during many, many trips to Europe and Asia. Rita was so welcoming and friendly from the moment we met her. She and Peter have created a beautiful home, with so many personal, artistic and amazing surroundings. We stayed in the Red Suite on the First Floor (One flight up in Europe). The room is huge with beautiful furnishings, a wonderful and comfortable king sized bed, and a quiet haven in the city. It was a short walk to the historic district. The private bath with the Red Suite is absolutely amazing, with marble floors, a huge tub to relax in, a walk in shower, and doors that open to a lovely private patio. Rita stocks the fridge in the room with beverages, wine, beer, sodas and snacks, all included. The room has a TV, air conditioning, and good free Wifi. The entire B&B is immaculately clean. There are only two rooms. We chose the Red Room as it is on the First Floor and we are older and didn't want too many steps. But the other room looks wonderful too. Breakfasts were also amazing, with so many choices - eggs, pastries, breads, rolls, fresh fruits and yogurt, cereals, meats, cheeses of all sorts, and fresh squeezed orange juice. This may sound like a commercial for the B&B, but it really is that good. The only issue is parking if you are coming by car. During the week, we parked in a nearby park for free but it is a long walk. We dropped our luggage off first, then parked. After 18:00 hrs on Friday, you can park on nearby streets for free for the entire weekend, so then we moved the car closer. But it was all worth it. Rita is more like an old friend and by the time you leave, you are sad to go. We stayed three nights and would return if we come back again. Thank you Rita and Peter for your lovely sanctuary! Feeling at home in Mechelen.......
B&B De Lachende Engel is a very nice place to stay in Mechelen. Personal attention, all in service, cold local beer in the mini bar, great breakfast, all included in the price. They have actual two apartments, with a "living room" part at the front of the house with a working table as well and a bed room at the back side, which is very quiet for sleeping. Ideal for business trips, if you want something else than the next chain hotel!

Welcoming and relaxing
This is with the b+b a real feeling that the hosts want you to relax and feel welcome. In addition the attention to detail is spot on. I am English but live in France and as I arrived the owner greeted me French. I assumed this was due to my address. We had a lovely quiet bedroom with a sitting room ( fridge, tv DVD, games, huge sofa... You name it we had it )
Mechelen the town is well worth a visit. People head to Ghent, Brugge, Antwerp, Brussels but for me after one night I have to say Mechelen has lots going for it
