Terrible Hostel, so bad we had....
I had booked in to stay here with a friend who was visiting me (i live in ghent) for a Saturday and Sunday night. When i booked, it seemed thee pictures were nice and reviews were good. However much to my suprise this was not the case. Upon arrival, there is a big grey building with a little sign outside stating the name. There were 3 men standing outside the door who started shouting and intimidating me and my friend. They were very seedy and made us so uncomfortable. When we checked in we were greeted my Borja, a friendly receptionist. During our check in the men entered the building. One stood behind me making derogatory comments and making inappropriate noises. The receptionist then looked at them and they left. He told us they were 'workers', whatever that meant. It was a horrible welcome into a hostel. We then got our room key and proceeded to out room. The corridors were dirty, smelly and smelled like wet cloth is the only way i can discribe. When we got to our room we open the door and were met by an overpowering smell of chlorine. The room had obviously been cleaned with Chlorine, and it was so strong we had to leave our window open all night to air it out. (it was freezing out) but better being cold than unable to breath with smell. That evening we decided to go out for a walk and when leaving the hostel there were dirty food bin bags left outside, one of which the food had spilled over and there was an egg shell and dirty wrappers on the ground beside it. Upon stepping out onto the street, a rat ran from the food bags past us. It was utterly disgusting!
I was appauled to be honest that this business was even running. For the price (we paid 160 for 2 nights) it was awful. We left on the sunday. We were told we could have a refund on the Sunday night however as Sunday is cheaper than Saturday we were only given 60 euro back. Meaning we had paid 120 euro for a dirty smelly stay in a hostel. I usually do not complain but i actually couldnt stay here. also the walls are extremely thin so i was woken early by the noise of cleaners and talking of other guests.
THe only positives i would have is that the receptionist was friendly, bed was comfy and there was a little kitchen. However unfortunately all of these negative comments completely overwrite the good comment. I would never ever stay there again nor allow anyone i know to stay there!

The room was big, with a nice kitchen and decent toilet, but apart from this, there were several issues: some were small (broken toilet seat, numbers in the cooker erased so I had to ask my fellow traveler in another room how it worked, just the very basic elements in the kitchen, many stains in the white wall, no TV) some were rather annoying (noise in the corridor at night, and in the street in the early hours; they cut the water suppply for a few hours in the second day of our stay, and the cleaning lady chucked me out at 10:30 when in fact check out is meant to take place at 11!). Thanks good the two receptionists I talked to were absolutely fantastic!!

Room is like an apartment
What a place to stay in Gent!!! On the doorstep are the historical sites of the city. The en-suite rooms had everything, even a kitchen area with a fridge, hob, kettle - fully equipped with pots, pans, plates, cutlery. A real treat for a hostel. It was bright and clean. The only negative was the noise but expected for such a busy place!

Fabulous Hostel in Ghent
13 o'clock Hostel is a fabulous place to stay! Close to everything, tram stop right outside the door. Very friendly, helpful staff, very clean rooms, self contained. Great security also. I highly recommend it!

Great location - quiet street just minutes' walk from all the main attractions in town. The room itself was clean and spacious, but very minimalistic in decor and offering. Don't expect to socialise / meet other travellers while staying here - this is purely a place to sleep.
