Lovely old hotel let down by n....
Having booked a budget room (still not cheap at over 100 euro per night), our expectations were not unreasonably high. The staff are friendly and helpful and the breakfast buffet in the cellar room overlooking the canal is great. Regrettably however, the arrangement of the rooms means that rooms 11 & 12 are hopelessly compromised by paper thin walls which mean that you can hear everything - a bit like having a stranger completing their ablutions and carrying on their conversation in your room! There is therefore little privacy and limited sleep if, like us, you prefer to retire around 10pm. It may be that other, more expensive rooms are better, but I could not recommend use of either room 11 or 12 until this issue is addressed by the hotel. Most rooms are likely to be affected by external noise (the nearby building sites start work at 7am) and cobbled streets make for noisy traffic.

We were disappointed with this hotel – it’s not cheap, but did not meet expectations. It was booked to celebrate my 50th birthday and we contacted the hotel to inform them of this and ask for the most romantic room they had available - we had paid for a Deluxe Canal View Room. We received an email confirming this request would be accommodated. The room wasn't even in the main part of the hotel - which was full of character, stained glass and beams - and in effect we were in the old cellar down narrow steep ill-lit steps. Not deterred, we liked the size of the room and remained open minded. The room service was not good - the carpets were not vacuumed during our 4 night stay (rugs on tile floors). The bathroom was cleaned only 3 times despite ensuring we were out straight after breakfast as requested in order to facilitate cleaning – we actually saw a sign that said if your room could not be cleaned because you were present, staff would not return at a later point. The bedspread was never put back on the bed and the duvets were just pulled up and over. The poor reviews regarding the breakfast sadly are true. Food was not replenished and as it was served between 7.30am-10.30am, this often meant not a lot of choice by 9.30am. As you are on holiday, it’s always nice not to have to rush to breakfast for fear of no food being left! Tables were often not cleared and the room was too small to accommodate comfortably the number of tables. I can't comment on the staff because we had little interaction. On check-out we got a simple ‘goodbye’. There was no assistance with bags on arrival or departure and this would have been a welcome offer, given the steep dark steps. My husband and I are very friendly people and so it was somewhat of a shock that the hotel staff were polite, but not necessarily welcoming. In all, the hotel is not bad - just not value for money. I expected better service, quality of bedding (which was old and looked cheap), food (which never varied – same thing every morning, as long as you went early), etc. The décor is tired and the TV didn’t work properly. Be aware there is no tea/coffee making facilities so they will charge you 5 euros for two cups of tea outside of the breakfast period! In its favour, it is close walking distance to the main square. In summary, Bruges has an abundance of hotels so you will find something better for the money.

This hotel is beautiful. We arrived at 10.30am for 3 nights and was able to check in straight away even though check in was at half 2, good start!! rooms are quirky, could do with a little decorating but we were only in there to shower and sleep so it was everything we needed for our stay. The hotel staff were lovely and very helpful, someone was always on the desk. The location of this hotel was amazing, 8 minute walk from the market square. I really do recommend this hotel to anyone for a short break.

Romantic short stay
Interesting to read some of the comments it sounds to me that some people will complain about anything!Once you take into account that this is a very old listed building that cant facilitate a lift & yes we were silly to arrive with one huge suitcase the experience was fantastic!!!
The hotel is charming & being situated in a perfect position by the canal very quiet & only a 10 minute stroll into town we dont think we could have chosen better.
The bedroom room number 64 was spacious & extremely quiet we wondered at one stage whether there were other guests in the hotel. The bed was huge & comfortable providing us with some of the best sleeps that we have enjoyed at home or abroad.
We found breakast to be good & varied yes there could be space issues if everbody arrived at the same time probably between 9 & 10 but we never encountered any problems.
The reception staff were very warm & friendly always happy to help I think we encountered 5 different faces & all were great. I would like to give a special mention to Heidi who went out of her way to help with my train ticket issues I hope your glasses turn up soon????
Bruges is a wonderfully charming old town & Hotel Ter Bruheis the ideal place to be based.
