Appealing and great location, ....
Guesthouse Bernardin is uniquely located in the skirts of the old Church of St Jacob/St James in central Antwerp. The apartments have sought to meet the challenge of small heritage-protected spaces with imaginative and elegant design. In our case (No 5), the result was photograph-ready, but practically a bit lacking. The only plumbing is up a narrow stair in the bathroom, which makes dealing with tea and coffee downstairs troublesome. There was nowhere in the sleeping space apart from the floor to put a suitcase or unpacked clothes, no rails or hooks in the bathroom, and not even a soapdish in the shower. Much of this could be quickly fixed, and the location and general quality remain strong positives for a visit to under-rated Antwerp.

Lovely little cottages but ver....
The cottage was lovely, on 2 levels, with bedroom upstairs. They have been well done, and the bed was extremely comfortable. The location was good, and the staff were lovely. The breakfast was good, and beautifully served. The only thing I found difficult were the stairs. I am a fit person, and I struggled to get up them with a suitcase, they really were scary steep. Going down was even worse, and I was really scared I was going to fall. The photo on the website gave no real impression of how steep and difficult to climb they are, especially with a suitcase. It took the edge off an otherwise ideal stay. If you have any kind of mobility issue, or aren't good with stairs better not stay here I think.

My colleague and me stayed in the Bernardin Guesthouse on our business trip. The accommodation was organised by our local colleagues. At arrival we had the surprise that each of us had a "house" by ourselves (see photos where i stayed in the right house and my colleague in the left).
Very nicely renovated detached houses where you could feel the passion of the owners for their business (they also run a renowned restaurant next door).
The breakfast was served in "my houses", so i could invite my colleague over in the morning ????
Thank you for your hospitality!

In the heart of the centre, you will find these old 17th century houses transformed to guesthouses. Interior is modern, without doing harm to the "old" style of the houses, you feel at home, not as much in "a hotel".

Great sleeping experience at u....
The owners of the Bernardin restaurant have tastefully renovated three apartments that hug the St. Jacobskerk. For travellers seeking authentic and out-of-the-ordinary places to stay, this BB is definitely worth its serious price, thanks to the combination of original details and modern design solutions.
Our apartment (no. 2) has a narrow living room with a lovely tile floor. On the first floor, to be reached by a spiralling staircase, is a double bed, a toilet, and a foldable (sic) shower.
The three apartments, next to each other, are situated in a quiet, dead-end alley, separated from the restaurant area by a stone wall. Wooden benches allow for outdoor breakfasting or drinking in summery weather. One key gives access both to the apartment and to the porch via which one enters the alley from the street.
A good breakfast, at a surplus of €12 pp, is served in the apartment at a time arranged in advance.
The location of this little paradise spot is only minutes walking from the Meir and its many cultural and commercial attractions.
The fact that the appartments are run by the owners of the Bernardin restaurant can be inconvenient. It is clear that the rhythm of the restaurant takes precedence over the managing of the apartments. You need to arrange in advance when you pick up a key, and until when you can temporarily leave luggage on the day of departure (basically: only during moments there are people at the restaurant).
Nonetheless: warmly recommended!
