Good experience and value

I did a lot of research before selecting Sugar Bay for our week-long Barbados trip. In general, the resort was wonderful and met our expectations in most ways. Rather than echo what others have said, I'm going to try to share answers to questions I had and hopefully help inform your decision. The week we were at Sugar Bay there was a huge influx of sargassum seaweed. It's nasty stuff and turns the water brown, making swimming in the sea impossible. This was hugely disappointing, as I was looking forward to snorkeling from the beach, but it's an act of nature no one can control. The seaweed cleared out the last few days of our trip and I did get to snorkel and really enjoyed it. However, if I had known that the west coast of Barbados almost never gets seaweed, I would have booked there. Other reviewers have mentioned that the pool is small. This made the seaweed situation worse, since everyone was in the pool. Also, the resort had TONS of kids the week we were there and they had very large pool floats that made the small pool feel even smaller. The food was mostly good, with some exceptional meals (don't miss the American BBQ night at the buffet) and some disappointing ones (didn't care for Caribbean night). Breakfast and lunch were not as good as dinner, in general, with a lot of the same items for breakfast each day. Colin's is a good lunch option for something different for lunch. UMI and Sizzle were both very good, though UMI left my husband needing more food so we had to hit the buffet afterward. Service was excellent in both restaurants. In Reef, they need more beverage servers to keep up with drink refills. We had an oceanfront room, #336, which was at the far west end of the property. It was a good size, great view, and clean and comfortable. The only issue is that I'd requested a quiet location away from the evening entertainment. The room was quiet in that we didn't have a lot of traffic in front of our door, but we were right above where the evening entertainment is held and it was very loud in our room. We like to go to bed early and get an early start on the day and that was hard to do in this room. We had plenty of hot water and towels, unlike others have mentioned. We thought nearly every staff member was pleasant (a few sour apples) and felt welcome but not a huge sense of friendliness that others have described. That was OK by us, but just mention it because it's such a theme in other reviews. Overall, if you have booked at Sugar Bay and the seaweed is not an issue, you will have a great time. It is in a great location for exploring the island.

Get yourself a glass of champagne, its going to be a long review. We have visited St. Lucia coconut Bay all inclusive holidays twice before, so we had expected high quality Caribbean holidays. After 8 hours flight, finding taxi was not difficult. Quick check in, u really don't need red caps, whatever u called them, to get u through immigration, not worth the money. Taxis outside everywhere, 60 Barbados dollars, about £20,to sugar bay, 25 minutes later, after nice sightseeing, u there. Welcoming drink on arrival or margarita in my case, as iam allergic to pineapple in rum punch, and cold minty flannels, nice touch. Quick check in, u get to wear their bracelet as its a room key as well, suitcases deliver to the your room,. We upgraded to garden suit view on 3 bed floor, 5 of us, two bedrooms and sofa bed, bath ropes, sleepers, safe, kettle, water in fridge, walk in shower. Rooms cleaned every day, no issues there at all. U have umi japanese restaurant and sizzle steak restaurant, but u limited to one visit per week. Lovely service in both of them, the best sushi I ever had. In sizzle u need to pay extra for lobster or different steaks, but its all cleary stated. Beach wonderful, u have beach boys, walking around asking u for drinks, and at 2.00pm they will bring u jelly shots and minty flannel to cooled down. Food at the buffet, amazing, scallops, prawns, bbq, steaks, etc. Entertainment very quiet, carabeen night on Tuesday, finishing at 10.00pm.nothinhg after. No music at the swim up bar or through the day. Pub opens at 9.00pm,.my husband had lots of fun conversation with the barman, very friendly. Pub not too busy, but nice atmosphere. U can take local reagge busses for £0.70or 2 Bajan dollars, u better use Bajan dollars, they all take it, as much as American dollars, but u get the change in Barbados dollars. 3 Bajan dollars is a £1.u get the same exchange rates in hotel as in bank, in banks u need your passport. Do go out and go to North of the island to animal flower cave £7 entrance, Harrison caves £20,atlantis Submarine in Bridgetown £100,coolrunnings catamaran £68,with the last one u get all inclusive food and drink, swimming with turtles, snorkeling to see shipwreck and general fun. Oistins on Friday night is a must, the whole Barbados gets there for fried fish, try mahi mahi, local called dolphin, its not, but its tasty. U need to go there by 7.00pm or u won't get places. U eat with plastic cutlery it cost about £10 but its lots. Ask for 4 banks local beers for a deal of 10 Bajan dollars £3,music dance local craft, shops. Don't forget to go to St. Lawrence gap, amazing night life, felt so safe, even my kids gone there by themselves (19and16).need to mention amazing staff, jamar at swim up bar, for his amazing drinks, Ricardo always had bottle of prosseco ready for me, kendra at the reception had so much patience with my emails and thanks to her and cherrise mottley we managed to be put on the catamaran cruise as they forgot about us and only thanks to the girls, who's been calling them, they send us a taxi. Kendra and cherrise, u been so helpful, thank u so much, when I said goodbye to cherrise, I cried. U both did make me so welcome. U have cinema night on the beach on Thursday, popcorn and drinks, trying to remember so much, what else? Never a problem with sunlonge, if u have problems with people trying to reserve the seats, just remove their towels, it's what we did. Seaweed a little on the beach, not really a problem, u can still swim, use kayak or other not motorised sports. OK now to why I gave 4stars not 5. They take deposit of u on arrival, to cover damage or damage your phone calls, £400 its a fight too get it back, still waiting for a bank statement to check if it was all given back. They will try to charge u £3per person per day for tourist charges, u can ask to take it off your final bill, if u loose bracelet /room is key is 25 Bajan dollars and let's don't forget the charge for beach bag25 Bajan dollars, bag was in our room, haven't even seen was there. And u pay all the money in, but only one trip to ala carte restaurants in the week, other than only buffet. No live music during the day, no aerobics, no activities. Plus big thing as well, they offer u10 minutes massage for free, but every time u go to spa, there is no space, come on, if u offer, deliver, or if not, don't bower to advertise, this made me angry, that's why next year we booked turtle beach in Barbados instead.

Amazing week celebrating a spe....

As many people have already commented, this is a really great hotel made even better by the staff who work there. We felt we had to comment on trip advisor as we really thought this was the best hotel experience we have ever had, with excellent food and drinks available from its various restaurants and bars all served by people that clearly enjoyed their jobs and enjoyed meeting their guests. With its location it is a quick transfer from the airport and also close to Bridgetown and the amazing Carlisle beach. We had a great time and extend our thanks to the hotel and all the staff.

Just returned from Sugar Bay and already can't wait to go back! The staff are amazing, so friendly and helpful. The food was great and always a good variety. Definitely worth the extra cost to stay in the ocean view rooms. The beach, hotel and grounds were stunning. The only excursion we went on was a catamaran sunset cruise with Calypso Cruises which I would highly recommend. We even got to swim with the turtles and booked in advance and direct. Truly had the holiday of a lifetime at Sugar Bay...go ahead and book

Absolutley Stunning!

Well where do i start with this review? From the moment we arrived at Sugar Bay we were greeted by wonderful staff who supplied us all with cool fresh towels to help with the heat and a glass of delicious rum punch. We were then show to our room which was a good size. The bed was huge and we had a nice view of the garden. Another couple that were with us had a sea view room which was also stunning! The beach is gorgeous with clear water which is easy to swim in. There was quite a lot of seaweed at first but the staff worked effortlessly to clear it. The pool isnt deep which is good for just cooling down in the heat and the swim up bar is an added bonus. The food from morning to night is absolutely gorgeous and there is a huge variety for everyone. There are also a few restaurants in the resort. There was the steak and grill and also a Japanese which were both exceptional. If you are just wanting a lite snack there is Colins bar just at the bottom of the beach which does burgers and chips. For the night time there is very good live music and acts to keep you occupied and also a bar called the Mongoose which is open until 1am. Here you can play pool, darts and air hockey aswell as having a few drinks. As for the staff they are truly remarkable people who bend over backwards to make sure you are having a good time. Aykeem, Ricardo and Derick to name just a few make sure your drinks were topped up even without having to ask. All the staff are very polite, always make time to have a little chat no matter how busy they are, they also make you feel at ease. They clearly love what they do and enjoy making the amazing cocktails for you to enjoy. Excursion wise we only went on 1 and that was the catamaran luxury cruise on the cool runnings 4. It’s honestly worth the money and a truly remarkable and breathtaking experience. Sugar Bay is an outstanding place to stay and i honestly couldn’t praise the resort enough. I would love to return sometime in the near future just need to get saving! Thank you to everyone who made it a holiday to remember! Until the next time :)
