Great value and service
We stayed with two kids during the christmas week. We had a suite with two bedrooms with nice mountain views, breakfast and dinner included. Both breakfasts and dinners were very good quality and the service was very friendly and fast. The dinner menu was different every night with a vegetarian option available, which we sometimes preferred for the kids. There is a nice sauna. The hotel is just a short walk (5 min, even with kids and ski boots) from the ski school, ski lift and to a few other restaurants, but we decided to go out for dinner only once out of six or seven nights because the included dinner was perfectly good. So overall, great service, very friendly and helpful owners and excellent value for money.

Great little hotel run by a ve....
So, if you're reading this, you're probably thinking of going to stay. I would if I were you.
- Manuela, Hans and their staff are very welcoming. They did so much to help us and it felt like nothing was too much trouble
- The hotel is very clean, the decor is nice and up together and the whole ambience is lovely
- There is free wifi and it works well enough to stream video
- The prices are very reasonable, especially in the bar
- The location is good, only a minute or so to walk to the piste, hire shop or ski school. If you put your mind to it and don't mind a bit of off roading you could probably ski right back
This was the first time we did a group trip that wasn't with a UK tour operator. I would definitely say this worked out far better, it's all about holidaying like a local. We would definitely head back to Das Platzl, it was great.

A great little find.....
We know Schladming quite well having stayed before or visited on day trips from other resorts. We chose to stay in Rohrmoos as it provided doorstep skiing and good après ski opportunities.
Hans and Manuela are the owners of the hotel. They were warm and friendly and made us feel very welcome. The Platzl is traditional in style and we were allocated the very cosy Stammtisch area for all our meals. Breakfast was excellent and offered all the usual Austrian fare – cereals, breads, cold meats, cheese, yogurts, fruit, boiled eggs, bacon and scrambled eggs, hot chocolate, etc, etc. It was certainly on a par with many 4 star hotels we have stayed in. Evening meals were served between 6-7.30pm which was a little early for us but typical of Austria. We were late one evening due to missing a ski link from Hauser Kaibling but our hosts were gracious about it. Dinner consisted of 3 courses with a salad bar. There was a choice of 2 main courses which you chose during breakfast. The food was good Austrian fare but the courses were served immediately after each other and we would have preferred a little more time between servings.
Our party consisted of two families of four (including teenagers). We stayed in two apartments which appeared to be privately owned but used by the hotel. The apartments were quite different from each other but provided good accommodation i.e. bedroom, bathroom, small kitchenette, lounge (with sofa bed) and dining area. Towels were replaced and bins emptied every second day but other than that we had to be self sufficient. The apartments were situated about a 3 minute walk from the hotel where we had our breakfast and evening meals. There was a spacious ski room and boot warming rack in the apartment block and we were able to ski to/from our door to the lifts which linked us to the Planai, Hochwurzen or Reiteralm areas.
The only criticism we had was that the hotel (like many others in Austria) did not take credit cards so we needed daily trips to the ATM to withdraw the cash required to settle our account – not helpful for the budget!
Overall I would thoroughly recommend the hotel and/or apartments and we would certainly return. It was very good value for money and we had a great week.
Schladming is a fantastic ski area with lots of long runs, mountain restaurants and a great lift system. There has been a huge investment in the infrastructure due to the World Championships being held there in 2013. As a ski area it is certainly less expensive than other big name resorts in Austria.
Mountain restaurants and après ski:
The Taueralm, Rohrmooos – excellent position at the base of the Hochwurzen ski and toboggan runs and a natural stop off point for coffee/schnapps and lively après ski.
Familienhotel Austria, Rohrmoos – located beside the Taueralm. Its mountain restaurant had great food, best on the mountain, with friendly staff (Sabi in particular!). At our request the Frau put on a special lunch for us on our last day and provided a fabulous buffet of pork ribs, salad, warm sauerkraut, Tiroler Grostl potatoes and chips – the quantities defeated even us! Our booking was taken a few days in advance and totally on trust. To have gone to such effort was exceptional, was much appreciated and gave us a fine end to our week.
Uncle Willies Hut, Planai. A popular atmospheric mountain restaurant, very busy, good food but some of the waiters were grumpy bordering on rude.
Berggasthof Scharfetter, Hauser Kaibling – really good food but very unfriendly waiter which quite spoiled the experience. My brother had been there a few weeks earlier and raved about the food and the hospitality – a pity we couldn’t say the same.
Schafalm, Planai – a great mountain restaurant with good food, easily accessed for non-skiers as it’s almost next the top of the Planai Gondola. Well worth staying up for the live music/après ski but it is a long ski down if you’re ‘over-refreshed’!
Tobogganing/night skiing, Rohrmoos – the tobogganing is fantastic – long, fast, well lit and great fun. You have to pay for a night ski pass for the gondola but it’s well worth doing. You can do as many runs as you can fit in between 19:00 and 22:00 hrs and there are restaurants at the top, half way down and at the bottom for pit stops! It’s an expensive evening but well worth it.
The one big negative I have about Austria in general is that they have not imposed a smoking ban in bars/restaurants so the smell of drifting cigarette smoke is difficult to tolerate. It’s about time Austria caught up with the rest of the EU!

Warm welcome, excellent breakf....
Small hotel a few minutes walk from the piste, possible to ski back to the door if the snow is good. We stayed for a week and had B&B 3 days and half board the other days. Hans (owner/chef) offers a set menu every evening but will change the main course if asked in advance. Manuela, his wife, runs front of house and is very friendly & welcoming. In the past we have stayed elsewhere & used the bar as our local. This was our 1st stay at the hotel but we will return. Shower room is a bit small but that is often the case in Austrian hotels, view of the mountains from our balcony. Excellent breakfast, dinners tasty & very good value if taken as half board, but a little early & served too quickly for my taste, but that is the Austrian style.
