Skiing with the old lads
Second visit to the hotel with five mates who ski every year, with says it all. Been to better, but this place ticks all the boxes. Close to the lifts and only a short walk from the centre of town. Hotel could be described as basic, but more than sufficient. Clean and tidy, with friendly staff. Although no choice of main meal at dinner, the quality is good. Bar is quiet, but does a good toastie if asked for. Would recommend.

Welcoming and comfortable.
Take no notice of the earlier jaundiced reviews from one group, this is a nice place to stay. Four of us were here for Christmas week. We booked late - attracted by the excellent offer price through Crystal. It's unequivocally 3 star so the Zum Kaiserweg lacks the facilities you'd get in a more expensive Austrian ski hotel. There's no spa but the excellent public pool/spa is a good alternative. There's not much choice of menu (none for most courses at dinner) but the food is good and is pleasantly served, and in daylight there's a fantastic view from the restaurant of the sun-lit mountains opposite. There was not much of a view from our balcony but the room was clean, warm and comfortable. It's not ski-in ski-out but it's a very short walk to the nearby Hochwurzen lifts and a quick ski-bus ride to the Planai lift. The boot-room is rather pokey but who cares? We found all the staff pleasant, welcoming and accommodating. It was especially pleasing to find that the wine list had plenty of choice for well under 20 euros a bottle and that tap-water was available by the carafe (both unusual in Austria). We had very good skiing and snowboarding conditions for 5 of the six days, marred only by the inexplicable ski-bus timetable from Rohrmoos back down into Schladming. There are no buses from lunch until late afternoon and this was a problem for the one beginner in our group, as the chairlift allows constant access up the mountain to the beginner slopes but not back down again. That doesn't matter if you are reasonably proficient on snow, but for her it meant a choice between too short or too long a day on the slopes or a long trek on foot down the road back to the valley. But that's not a reflection on the hotel. We would happily return.

Great winter low season stay
We spent a lovely skiing week in this guesthouse in March.
Location of the house is just great! About 3 minutes walk to the Planai West lift, 5 minutes to the nearest supermarket - closes at 7 pm on weekdays, 6 pm on Saturday, the same time to a gas station which is open longer, if not 24/7. About 7 minutes to the lovely small city center.
Schladming is about 20 minutes car drive from the Dachstein glacier (or 45 by ski bus) - I would recommend visiting on a clear day for views, your Ski Amade skipass is valid there.
We got two double bed rooms with a common balcony facing the mountains - lovely views on sunny days!
The rooms were adequately spaced (however one of the rooms felt a little smaller than the other), each one with a big enough wardrobe and an en suite bathroom. The rooms were spotless clean, maintained daily. The bathroom was ok and had a functional hair dryer, the shower cubicle was normally sized (did not feel small to us, as mentioned in another review). There is a soap/shampoo stack (empty during our stay:) ). The towels are changed once a week. There is no refridgerator, nor a kettle in the room. The bed is sooo comfortable! Not too hard, not too soft, just perfect.
The wifi was fast and reliable during our stay.
There were only a few other skiers in the house, therefore we always found a place on the boot dryer in the ski room.
We went on a half board basis. The breakfast included some ham and cheese selection, pate, marmelade, honey, cereals and an egg dish - something between scrumbled eggs and omelette. It was repetitive, but you could choose a different breakfast every day (if you did not eat everything at once:) ). It would be great to put a small trashbin on each table, and some extra clean cups, if someone likes to drink tea and coffee at the same time.
I have to say that I was afraid of dinners, being picky and knowing there was no choice, but I was pleasantly surprised! There is a soup - mostly a broth of different types - with fritates, knodels, vegetables, crisps.... followed by a main course of a local receipe - a piece of meat cooked in different ways with a side dish, and a desert. It was good, I can imagine that the locals eat the same meals in their homes.
All staff was polite and always helpful.

Would not return
This is a hotel mainly for skiers and from the very door of the hotel you get hit by the horrible smell of so called ski room. It was never intended as such so in there it smelled like dead rats in wet socks. There is not enough space for everyone, if you leave you shoes there, they will completely wet in the morning. It was great we had our own shoe drier and we dried them in the room.
The parking in front of the hotel is not enough for more than 3 cars, squeezed next to each other. When it became very icy and slippery in front of the hotel, nobody even bothered to remove the ice - it was up to everyone how to balance. The parking was some 200 meters away.
The hotel offered half board. Even in an airplane you get a choice of different sandwiches, here we had to eat what they had cooked. Nobody ever bothered to translate anything in English. If the people liked a salad, for example and the tray was empty, it was just empty - no refill of the same food.
The only person who spoke English was the owner and not a single word from the staff.
The bathroom was more like space capsule - even a very skinny person would have problems turning inside. The hot water was coming and going - depending if anyone else in the hotel was using it. Still, the room was specious and very, very clean - it was cleaned on daily basis.
The hotel was located about 150 meters from the gondola, which was really convenient.
The distance to the center of the city was about 5-7 min. walk.

Good place to stay near the sk....
Good and quiet place to stay, near the Planai West /Rohrmoos ! skilifts.
Food is good and plentiful, you will not get a choice of menus though.
The owner Mr Raimund is very helpful and will try to do about anything he can.
My only complaint will be the skiroom which is very small making it very difficult to get your boots on or off. Moreover very few boots will have a place on the boot warmer (about 1/3 of total) so if you arrive after 1600 hours you will have zero chances to have warm and dry boots the next day.
