What are you looking for?
I read previous reviews prior to booking and staying, and once here I could see first hand and understand some of the complaints. Being greeted with a dozen or so buckets on the stairwell to the rooms catching water from holes in the roof probably wasn't the first impression I was looking for either. Having said this however, my room was clean and airy and the shared bathrooms I found to be mostly clean and acceptable. I utilised the shared kitchen and had a meal in the bistro all of which I found to be pleasant. All the staff I encountered were friendly and helpful. My only issue worth mentioning is that I stupidly locked myself out of my room during the night when going to the toilet. I searched everywhere for a security number or licensee number that I could phone for assistance but got nothing. It was a very long night trying to sleep in the kitchen until a staff member arrived in the morning. Would I stay again? Yes. Would I recommend to others? Only if they are not expecting the Shangri La!

Upfront I'm a local resident and haven't stayed in the pub and as such my review is more about the food and the pub itself.
Overall it is a friendly environment and whilst it's not the most glamorous that others have criticised and yes there are others on the north shore that have been over renovated, it is a honest and genuine place to visit without fear or favour. A relaxing place to have good pub food and a beer with friends and family without being taken to the cleaners.
I'll be back and hope to see you there.

Perfectly fine for a meal in a....
If you're into trendy, quinoa, sticky black rice, chia or the currently fashionable pulled pork, don't bother. However, if you want basic pub food, at reasonable prices and good service then pop in for lunch. Three of us had the Nachos and one had a Beef Burger. Nachos were fine and perfectly edible, and I'm told the Beef Burger was OK too. The staff were really friendly and helpful. We'd all go back if we were in the area again.

Upper North Shore Drab plus Ma....
Ultra un-trendy hotel, a sort of drab working class, western suburbs looking place situated on the leafy North Shore. The food was acceptable if pretty standard bistro fare, with the usual budget-priced weekday specials ... but $9 for a 345oz bottle of local apple cider was well over the top!!! Or to put it another way - paying Steyne Hotel drink prices WITHOUT the ambience or views!

Stayed here for work for a couple of weeks. Great for a drink and pub meal but that’s where the joy ends. Train line will keep you up. Bedrooms are reasonably clean but the shared bathrooms haven’t been cleaned for ages....Absolutely filthy! Used bandaids laying around for days, Cockroaches everywhere, lights that don’t work (I showered in the dark), dirty toilets. For $105/night I’ve stayed in way better accommodation in Sydney. Avoid!!
