Lacked wow factor
We stayed at the Teahouse City Apartment for 2 nights and while it was exceptionally clean and well maintained, we felt it lacked the wow factor, especially given it was $470 per night. Access to the apartment is via a rear office block driveway and there is no lock on the gate from the carpark to the apartment. It did not feel comfortable to leave the bedroom or lounge windows open as they are right inside the gate. We had a hubcap stolen from our car - as the carpark is not secure and nor is the gate of the unit. We wanted to self-cater and while the kitchen was well equipped, the benches and fridge were stocked with items that were not complimentary so we had to move it out of the way to make way for our food. The breakfast provisions were really good but we were not aware that the apartment was going to be serviced so it was a surprise when we arrived back and someone had been inside and refreshed the provisions. If you have access issues, there are stairs down to the apartment and a sunken lounge (neither have handrails) and it is positioned on a fairly steep hill. We enjoyed our stay but it was very expensive.

Our stay at Hatherley Birrell Collection was unforgettable. I got engaged to my partner on this trip, and Rebecca was very helpful setting up our room for the romantic occasion (roses, champagne, candles etc). The room itself was delightful. Quite large and very clean and comfortable. A lovely breakfast was provided to us each morning. We loved the outdoor bath (which was amazing to soak in after a long day around town), which really sets this place apart from other b&b’s in the area. I highly recommend staying here for any couples looking for a romantic getaway.

We were fortunate to spend 4 nights in the Magnolia Pavillion. We arrived somewhat stressed and weary, but left feeling like two new people....totally refreshed and relaxed. The daily breakfast trays were delicious and a great way to start each day. I loved sitting on the deck with a coffee in the morning or a wine in the evening.....it was very peaceful. Laurie was welcoming and helpful.....and it was lovely that Rebecca came to say hello on our first day. Even though we were occasionally aware of other people in the general vicinity, I truly felt like the Manolia Pavillion was our own private retreat. Thank you!

Art trumps functional
All the reviewers have been kind plus accurate in descriptions. Yes, we enjoyed the outdoor granite tub and found a fun movie to watch, but ...
... the planning was apparently given to an artist - not an architect/designer. The bathroom sink reminds me of the old spit sink the dentist had. Shaving was difficult (there is a shaving mirror, but it is too dark to use). No soap dish. Faucet handle leaked. Horizontal surfaces, to spread out on, are lacking. Most people will have to stoop to use the bathroom mirror. The glass bathroom door, if left open at night, is precariously close to the bed. The heated towel rack is either faux or not working.
The cold breakfast offered was disappointing. I defy you to use the kitchen sink more than once without banging your head on the low shelf above it. Instead of mine, I grabbed their bottle of water in error - a $4 mistake
Music was offered via Apple TV and a phonograph (nice touch), but we reverted back to our own. We were delighted to find a fun movie offered by Hatherley, but the TV screen is too small to watch in bed. No problem, we will use the lounge chairs - wrong! One was broken ... we watched the movie sitting on the floor with pillows braced against the foot of the bed.
Thank goodness we had a small car, they squeezed in three spaces where normally most would have been only two.
We found the bed very comfortable and the room quiet.
Conclusion: If you want an off-the-wall, memorable, campy place to stay, then this is it! If you seek a common sense layout and warm breakfast - look elsewhere.

Laurie is the most accommodating host. She went out of her way to make sure we had an amazing stay. The Magnolia Garden room was everything I had hoped for and more. The stone outdoor bath was pure luxury, with a gorgeous outlook onto the magnolia tree in the garden. Everything is carefully considered down to the delicious breakfast offerings in the fridge. A beautiful place to stay if you’re visiting Launceston. Thanks again, Laurie for your hospitality.
