Only stay here if you have now....

We have been travelling for several months and have stayed in many budget hostels but this is by far the worst I have ever stayed in. Although we arrived well after 3pm (checkout at 10am and check-in supposedly from 2pm) we had to wait for an hour for our beds to be ready. When we finally did get into the room it was very dirty and had very poor security. The dorm bathrooms were filthy with used toilet paper spilling out of baskets onto the floor, clumps of hair in the plug holes and it was only cleaned when we complained about the mess. Although the main door to the hostel locks automatically, they open it for anyone without checking and we would often come back to find our dorm room door wide open with no one inside. On one occasion we came home to find someone else asleep in our bed. He said reception had told him to take that bed and when we went to complain about this, there were two other girls in the queue also supposed to be in the same room as us, despite the fact there were no other free beds, i.e. they had allocated 13 people to a 10 bed dorm. After much discussion they decided to reallocate the intruder to another room but we had to ask for them to change the bedsheets, even though he had been sleeping in the bed with his shoes on..... Even then, they said they would not have the time to change them and so we had to change the sheets ourselves. That said, at least we knew they were clean as we witnessed the cleaner 'rearranging' old sheets for new guests on some of the beds in our room.... Plus at least we did get to stay in our room, the two girls we met at reception were moved twice during their stay! Having spoken to another guest in the same dorm he had been having the same problems all week (other people sleeping in his bed, poor hygiene/security etc.) and had also felt staff had been unhelpful. Dorm rooms were cramped (couldn't open the door without it banging against our bed) with poor lockers - 3/10 were broken and the underbed storage for large bags was not lockable either. There were also no plugpoints by the beds meaning everyone was competing for a few extension cables in the main common area as there was no safe space to leave it charging near to you in the room (see security issues above). Also no wifi in the rooms and signal was patchy even in the common areas at peak times. Also of note, the wifi password is "checkout11am" even though it is actually 10am and they charge a $100AR penalty for late checkout....given you have to enter the password several times daily we were a touch suspicious. Kitchen is tiny for the number of guests and very grubby but does at least provide breakfast (fruit loops and stale croissants) but common areas not sufficient nor comfortable for the number of guests. Not usually one to write bad reviews but really have nothing good to say about this hostel.

Infected with bed bugs

We had to find another hotel and check out at 11:30pm right after dinner, when we noticed the blood sucking bugs population on the walls and bed. At 9:00am the following morning we returned and got our money back partially, not before the desk manager stated “the sanitation authorities had checked the room and found nothing; if the bugs were for real they were not there at the time of check in”. Pure horse sh*t and I have it all on VIDEO. Do check in if you enjoy homeless shelter ambiance and you are in for kissing bug disease or necrotizing fasciitis.

We decided we would make this ....

This was our 3rd visit to HS. The staff Is friendly, cheerful and helpful to your requests. The really big plus HS has is its location being directly across the street from the Central Market and 2-3 minute walk along the street to the Carefour Supermarket. Along the way you pass a Macdonalds..if that is your taste. Nearby are other restaurants and shops plus Plazas, parks. The building itself is really in need of repairs e.g. our room on the Ground floor ... toilet seal needs replacing as it leaks water..ugh, room door has to be pushed , more of a kick to open it after navigating the key correctly, door handle is loose, door handle to the small space outside the room is falling off, keyhole lock missing, etc. You could not call this a patio , the space is dirty (walls and floor), chairs you have to wipe if you wish to use the, and we used paper to wedge the door shut. Management needs to post a sign advising travellers not to use pots/pans to store their excess food in Refrigerator as that removes pots and pans from others who might wish to use same. Both taps in our bathroom sink need to have the washers replaced as you cannot stop the taps from dripping. Beware of mosquitos at night. Breakfast is basic but then we never rely on hostels for good breakfast. HS is very much a Caveat Emptor location and we have now found that for a few dollars more we can have a significant improvement.

Average hostel

It was quiet and a based in more around the older part of town which was cool. The rooms are very basic with some lockers broken so didn’t feel safe about leaving my stuff in them. They don’t provide towels and charge 50 pesos to hire one but it’s tiny!!!! Generally clean and comfortable for a couple nights if you’re looking for something cheap and cheerful.
