We thought this hotel was excellent for what we paid. The two staff we dealt with spoke good English were very friendly & even helped us book our transfer back to the airport. The room was basic but was just what we needed. Loved the breakfast - lots of variety.

A bit unsatisfactory
Check-in was OK, staff could be more friendly (smiling should not be optional) but they hardly spoke any English. This is unforgivable in a resort that has one main attraction (glaciers) but attracts people from all over the world. We had to carry our luggage upstairs ourselves. The hotel and our room are best characterized by the words “basic, simple, cheap”; furniture is the cheapest one can buy, and the doors are thin and let in any outside noise. Carpet in room and on the stairs is low quality and thin. The bed (cama matrimonial in Spanish) was a small Queen size. And a good indication of the level of furniture and construction was the TV, the old boxy type which should be found only in a museum since flat panel TVs have been available for over a decade. The room was hot and I found out the knob of the heater was missing, so I was supplied with a wrench to turn the knob. When we left it still was not fixed. The telephone on a night stand next to the bed did not work. There are no rooms with a nice view, as surroundings are pretty bleak.
Location is not that good: while stated as only 500 Meter from downtown, it is not mentioned that a walk back is uphill on a deserted road. Breakfast is downright poor: rolls (traditional Argentinean media lunas) are not fresh, they have no cheese or ham or eggs, only the little plastic containers with jam. When we left in the morning for our first excursion, I found out that by wriggling the door knob from the outside, I could open the door without a key (how is that for security?). Upon return it was fixed; but then we discovered just before taking a shower that they had forgotten to put new towels in the room. It is relatively clean, but I can think of better places to stay in El Calafate.

Pretty good hotel base in El C....
There are so many hotels & hostels to choose from in El Calafate!
We selected Hosteria San Julian based on availability over Xmas & New Year. They charged us a reasonable price given it was high season.
It's about a 10 minute walk out of town, up the hill, but it's not a difficult walk & it's pleasant enough & close to a couple more restaurants & bars.
Our room was large & spacious & looked out onto the front of the hotel. The staff were friendly & helpful. Breakfast was pretty good for Argentina, where this cooked breakfast has not been invtented!

Stayed 3 nights. The hotel is located on a hill, 10 minutes away from downtonw. The lack of elevator was not a problem for me but could be for old people or those carryng heavy luggage.
The room was clean. Good size. No bathtub but. Hair drier available. Breakfast good: coffee, tee, juice, yogurt, cereals, butter, jam and some tiny apples :)

Visiting Perito Moreno
Stayed here for 4 nights. Visited at the end of high season. Two people in a triple room. We were comfortable but it may be tight for three people. The bathroom was big but with plenty of unused dead space. No shelves, cabinets or anything to place your personal items on. The room and bathroom were clean but the shower area could use a re-caulking. The room was warm with good heat. It was also quiet. There is no elevator for upstairs rooms. You may have to carry your own bags. Breakfast was basic: coffee, milk, juice, yogurt, pastries, bread. Reception personnel were nice and helpful. Hotel is walking distance to the town center, some roads around are not paved. There is some street lighting but bring a flashlight.
