Dark, smelly, crowdy and depre....

I stayed for one night in a ten bed dorm and fled the next day in very early morning (as I had no sleep). The dorm was crowded with five bunkbeds. The dorm's bathroom had no ventilation other then into the dorm itself. It was dark, humid, smelly, crowded experience. There was a big confusion in who is occupying which bed as the staff had no controll over the their beds. The common areas are not bad. The location is good.

So good you could live there......

I stayed in Tango City in September 2009 (I checked June 2013 as it is the earliest available date option) when i arrived in Buenos Aires for the first time while I was looking for an apartment in the area. I later returned to the hostel when my lease on that apartment was up. I ended up living in the hostel for around 3 months (and briefly worked behind the bar for board and keep). The reason I did this? The hostel was great. Very central. Near some brilliant restaurants and bars (Desnivel and Sigue La Vaca are my 2 favourite steak houses in the city) and San Telmo comes to life with its flea markets and street tango. Added to this, the hostel staff were a lot of fun and the bar in the basement is a great place to meet other backpackers, cook some food, play some pool and check your emails. There are some livelier hostels nearby (Millhouse for example) but I preferred this place as it had a much more chilled out vibe. If you didn't want to go out, you didn't have to. The rooms were all perfect although one or two can get quite hot during hot summer nights. And having a lift in the centre of the hostel is a lifesaver for your back after many months on the road. Cannot recommend it enough.

nice hostel in great location

I was there a long time ago in 2004 but I remember I had a great time the room was a regular dorm nothing special but the staff was wonderful and helpful and I met really cool people from around the world. they have a nice kitchen and great tango lessons there. The location is really nice right in the old San Telmo. I don't know how it is today but I hope it is as good if not better.

It's shut!!!!

Its shut !!! I booked on hostel world but when I turned up at midnight it was closed for renovations. When I called they informed me that they had rebooked me at another hostel (which was a bit crappy). They said they send emails each night about rebookings but as I booked on the day itself they had not sent one to me. Luckily the taxi man waited for me as it is a dodgy area at that time of night. If I had not had my iPhone with the hostel world email which had the phone number, I would have been totally stuck in BA at midnight with nowhere to stay.
