Beautiful beach, amazing staff....

My husband & I stayed at this resort in May 2018 in the Hotel room (king bed). It was spacious enough for the two of us. I would not recommend the supersaver room (barely enough space to open your luggage). The rooms & resort grounds are kept clean. Rooms can definitely use a refresher. There was always hot water, but some days the shower/sink water was brown (just run it till it turns clear). There is a weekly charge for the safe in the room ($15 USD). The beach is absolutely gorgeous! We found it comparable to Aruba. I would recommend water shoes as there are lots of seashells in the sand & in the ocean and it is murky, which makes it difficult to see where you are stepping in the water. The pool area was clean and seemed to have been renovated. It would be nice to have a hot tub area. Quality of food throughout the resort was great. The buffet was good; I would just suggest varying the fish/meat options more often from one day to the next. The beach grill was good too. It is made-to-order, which is nice that it is fresh; however, I would suggest pre-cooking the jerk chicken as sometimes the wait time was too long. We really liked all 3 a-la-carte restaurants: Seafood, Italian & Mexican (Italian was our favourite). The courtyard was a nice gathering place during afternoon tea, which had nice snack foods like sandwich squares and cookies/scones. We found all the staff to be courteous, friendly, and tried their best to provide optimal service. Judith was a delight to hear signing at the buffet restaurant while you enjoyed your meal. Our friend who travelled with us celebrated her birthday while we were there & they made it a memorable one. One server brought in some fresh cut flowers from her home garden! I do agree with the Jolly beach slogan, 3-star resort with 5-star service. In particular, Elroy, a member of the entertainment staff, was a lot of fun as our aqua-fit instructor & ran Bingo (just wish Bingo was more than once a week)! The nightly entertainment was great and varied each night. Overall, I would recommend the Jolly Beach resort for a good relaxing vacation spot for either families or couples. If you get a deal, this is a good economical way to see Antigua on the Caribbean side (ocean is more calm & less seaweed than Atlantic side). We hope to return one day soon. :)

I wish I could give it 4*

I got a good deal on this trip and went with an open mind. I left charmed with Antigua but less impressed with the activities on the Jolly Beach. Room My Supersaver room, though tiny, had no issues with anything. It was conveniently located, and had a spectacular, full view of the Caribbean Sea (oh, those sunsets!). Thank you, Adela, for keeping it clean, and the resort management for honouring most of my requests related to it. [Suggestion: The safety pin on the patio door should not be removed by the housekeeping. It is left there for a reason - to prevent intruders from getting into rooms through the balcony day and night.] The single incident I encountered had to do with the door lock. It was resolved swiftly. Again, thanks Adela for assisting me with this. Not once did I notice a bug, either in the room or outside, nor was I bitten by one. The area was fogged daily (see the photo). Lack of bottled water in the rooms, though good for the environment, caused a good deal of inconvenience. And, as there are no fridges in the basic rooms, the water purchased at the store, or brought back from the refilling stations, quickly got warm. (I hear that some hotels in St. Lucia and Grenada for instance, do not offer bottled water in rooms, either.) Service Inconsistent, not overly accommodating, and noticeably less friendly towards single travelers. [Suggestion: time to make adjustments in the attitude and perception as solo travelling is gaining in popularity fast. It's the reality]. Definitely lots of room for improvement , including customer service training. You can tell some staff are miserable. From my observation the staff were seldom tipped, maybe that’s the reason. Still, I would like to thank Vivian and Eveline for their attentiveness. Food/Restaurants Except for a few items, especially the delicious omelets, fresh fish and mimosas, I didn’t care at all for the food served at the buffet. Some of it seemed ‘recycled’, e.g. fruit, cheeses, yogurt, cakes, certain veggies. Other foods tasted and looked as if they had come from Costco! What’s worse, the birds near and in the food were a nuisance, let alone a serious health hazard (see the photo). Guest are greeted and seated by the hostesses but they can request where they like to sit. I was a little confused by the buffet staff some wearing white tops, others blue. I never knew who was responsible for what. Making and changing reservations for the à la carte restaurants was not a problem (thanks Olivia!). We had been to all three and enjoyed the food at each one very much. Again, the catch of the day dishes were my favourite (I am a seafoodie, you see). The afternoon tea served with biscuits and canapés was a nice touch, and so was the beach barbecue. Jerk chicken at the beach grill – yum! Entertainment was good. The steel band and the beach bonfire are the must see performances. Those kids are really talented! Beach On occasion, I like to travel to the sun destinations alone, just for the peace and quiet, to read a book, do a crossword puzzle, take a nap, soak up the sun, and enjoy the view of a beautiful beach. At Jolly Beach I got precious little of that. Just like the rest of the island, the beach is striking, alright. It is vast, clean and in a prime location. But the relentless intrusions of loud vendors milling about, trying to sell stuff and services, made it impossible for me to relax, regardless of where on the beach I sat. Repeating: ‘No, thank you’ every 5 minutes ultimately became annoying. Because the beach is public, the management of the resort, despite the efforts of the staff security, doesn’t have much control over certain goings-on, e.g.: • Smoking, including marijuana • No life guards • No drink service (the bars are nearby) • Stray dogs running around, sometimes jumping at beach goers • Lounge chairs, put away by staff at night, need to be dragged back to the front of the beach by the guests in the morning • The palapas in best spots have to be reserved at daybreak; there are some new ones being put up, but during my entire stay not even one was completed, or any work was being done on them • The ‘aloe salesman’ who, without permission, begins rubbing the aloe on you to promote it; what if you are allergic to aloe? • An older man, named Shanty, persists on joining guests on lounge chairs uninvited, asking for food and money; the security tries to escort him off the beach, but he keeps coming back several times a day • I saw two male vendors kicking each other one morning, I assume fighting over ‘sales territory’ • One of the jet skis ‘agents’ came under the shade, although those are reserved for the guests, and dried off himself using the guests’ towel while the guests were away! • I witnessed a vendor sleeping on the hotel lounge chair under a palapa next to some ladies who encouraged him to be there by bringing him the resort food and drinks. The restless, not restful atmosphere on the beach spoiled the overall good experience for me. This, regretfully, will prevent me from returning to Starfish JBR. But if this is something you don't mind, it is a pretty good vacation place.

Beautiful beach, great staff

We had a superior room, very spacious, 2 double beds, lovely little patio with views of sea, bathroom could do with a bit of up-dating. The staff were fantastic, couldn't do enough for you and so friendly. The Italian and the fish restaurant excellent. The beach was stunning and had a fantastic holiday.

Coming back for more.

This is our first time in Antigua and staying in this hotel makes us want to come back and experience more of Antigua. The resort is huge that they had to take us to our room using a golf cart. You can walk to it, but with the luggage, it’ll be a long walk. Our room is the farthest building from where all the activities are happening (bldg Jamaica). It takes us 5 mins to go to the lobby, the buffet, and another 5 mins to walk to one of the restaurants. They have 3 restaurants on site (Mexican, Italian and seafood) and a buffet. We only tried the Mexican, and it was so good! The buffet is great as well. Enough choices for picky palates, like me and my 18 month old baby. Their entertainment team is just awesome. They really lift up the mood of the resort. They are there day and night. The night entertainment is fun too. They had a steel band one night, african night bonfire the next night, pool party, and a dj one night. You have tons of things to choose from, day and night. They also have 3 pools. Two for adults (with one pool bar) and one for younger crowd. The beach is the cherry on top. It’s one of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever been. Jolly beach is definitely on the top 5 beaches on our list that we’ve been to. They do offer a lot of different excursions and a car rental inside the resort too. So you dont have to look far. We did the Sting ray city and green island. The hotel room really do need some renovations ( but who stays inside the room anyway. ;) ). Otherwise, we are coming back.

Stunning beach and great hotel....

Absolutely beautiful beach on this side of the island; probably the best on the island. The other side, where Sandals and Pineapple beach are located, had horrible seaweed that was thick and brown and smelled like sulfur. It, apparently, does not come to the Jolly Beach side! As with other reviews, the hotel is not the newest, however, it is clean and is adequate. Pretty much every room faces the beach which is a bonus. A supersaver room is quite small, but a standard room has a bit better space, however, you aren't in your room that long anyway! Most do not have a refrigerator in them, but some of the newer ones do. Some of the rooms are by the nightly entertainment and it can go to midnight, so if you want a quiet room, request one and it will be on the other side of the beach. I stayed there and it was quiet, all day and night. The standard room has a closet with hangers and an iron and ironing board. There are no drawers or dressers. I had a king bed which was a little hard but sufficient. TV has a fair amount of channels with English programming. Con: The air conditioning works well, however, there is a decorative opening in the washroom wall that is open and faces the hallway to outside. Although it is covered in a screen as to not let in any bugs and it's up near the ceiling, it lets out a lot of the air conditioning. I have no idea why this isn't sealed. All your bathroom habits can be heard in the hallway if you happen to be walking by someone's room at that time! Not all rooms are like this, but many are. The room is definitely cooler than outside, but would be much cooler if this opening was sealed. Keeping the bathroom door closed helps keep some of the cool inside. Face cloths are difficult to get so I always advise to bring your own, if you use them. The food was good. Not too much variety but I'm not picky about food and just happy I don't have to cook, so I was fine with it. There is meat and fish every night prepared in different ways. French fries are always available at lunch and dinner. One evening during the week, dinner is on the beach and by the main pool and is fantastic! The food is great and they have a Caribbean dancing show after. It is a lot of fun and I think it is on Wednesday night. There is a main pool bar with an eating area above. There is a small afternoon restaurant across from the bar that serves, fries, hamburgers and jerk chicken until about 4:45pm. There is a line up usually but it's quite good and worth a try. There are activities during the day near the main pool. Entertainment staff is really friendly and fun. Booking dinners at the a la cartes can be difficult and usually have to be done first thing in the morning by the Mexican restaurant, however, sometimes (especially in off peak vacation times) you can get into a restaurant the same day. I only tried the Mexican one which was decent. I believe smoking was prohibited in most places but as a non smoker, I cannot confirm. However, I did not smell smoke the entire time I was there. Wifi is great in the lobby and courtyard area and usually pretty good in the buffet restaurant as well. It is pretty good by the pool and on the beach close to the main pool. It is spotty everywhere else. I paid extra to have it in my room and it wasn't great and still spotty but convenient. I believe, however, in this day and age, the wifi should be throughout the hotel for free. Some people may want to disconnect during their vacation, but as a solo traveler, I like to keep in touch with those at home. I really wish the hotel would reconsider the wifi availability. Although, like at most resorts, they discourage you from wanting to use the beach vendors selling excursions, the vendors are actually usually a bit cheaper. I did the Stingray City excursion and it was excellent. The rays aren't in captivity and it is interesting to meet them and feed them. Currency is East Caribbean however, American is widely used. There is a great supermarket with everything you can imagine across from the hotel and is safe to walk to. There are also other stores selling art and other things right nearby. There is a bus that has a stop near the entrance of the hotel which can be taken into the main town of ST. John's. Overall, the is a great place to go. The views are stunning and the hospitality of the people at the resort is wonderful. I went on this trip to relax and met so many great people, I ended up not relaxing since I was socializing so much but it was all worth it! It was fun! Highly recommend it!
