A silent witness to innumerable conspiracies, scandals and combats, the Red Fort or Lal Quila is a daunting structure, which was built by Emperor Shah Jahan when he shifted the Mughal capital from Agra to Delhi. The name Red Fort comes from the massive red sandstone walls that surround it. Originally, the Red Fort had two entrances - the Hathipol (elephant gate) and the Lahori Gate. Today, it is the Lahori Gate facing Chandni Chowk that is used by visitors. Every year, the Prime Minister hoists the National Flag of India at the Red Fort, to celebrate India's independence on the 15th of August.
