A total of 11 languages are spoken and understood including the native African isiZulu, Setswana and Afrikaans with English being the predominant language. Most people understand it and most sign boards make use of it.  

When to Go

Johannesburg can get really chilly during the month of May, June and July with temperatures dropping close to 0°C at times. For a change, come to Jo’burg to enjoy a summer Christmas on the beach. The Months of October thru February is the right time to visit the city. Stay on a little longer till mid-February for the FNB Dance Umbrella, one of the few annual Jo’burg festivals.

However, this winter, Jo’burg comes alive with the FIFA 2010. Need we say more!

Local Transport

Public transport consists of buses and minibuses that operate between 5AM and 10PM everyday. Buses run up and down from Jo’burg International Airport in Kempton Park to Park Station. Stuff your wallets somewhere safe as buses are the city’s primary mug-zones. Better yet, hop on the airport shuttle, the Airport Link to take you inside the city. Minibus fares begin at USD 0.70 to USD 1.20.
 
Decide on the taxi fair with the driver before you get in. Meters, most often, do not work. Avoid the metro system, especially the Pretoria Metro Line. Metro lines connected to areas inhabited by the black population are known for serious crimes.

The best way to get around the city: by renting a car. Get online quotes and reservations with Avis and Hertz. Others include CABS, First Car Rental, Pace Car Rental and Tempest Car Hires.
