Officially the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Netherlands is also commonly called Holland in English, and is bordered by Germany to the east, and Belgium to the south, with the North Sea to the west and north. The Netherlands, small, and densely populated, is surprisingly also one of the largest food exporting countries in the world. A constitutional monarchy, it is divided into 12 provinces, which can be grouped into four major regions: Western Netherlands (North-Holland, South-Holland, Utrecht, Zeeland) – also known as the Randstad, this is the most densely populated region of the country, Northern Netherlands (Drenthe, Friesland, Groningen, West Frisian Islands) – this is the most beautiful and least populated portion, Eastern Netherlands (Flevoland, Gelderland, Overijssel) – with plenty of forests and history, Southern Netherlands (Limburg, North-Brabant) – known for its population of Catholic persuasion.
