When to Go: As the summers do get hot, and the winters chilly, the best time to visit Rome is in Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). Average maximum summer temperature is about 30°C, and the average minimum winter temperature is 4°C.

Local Transport: Rome has an efficient public transport system, with buses, metros, and trams, all accessed by buying tickets from a 'Tabacchi', heralded by a big 'T' sign on the shop. Daily, tourist, weekly, monthly, and annual tickets are available at attractive rates. Using cars (hired or private) isn’t advised, as the traffic can be quite insane, and the roads treacherously unmarked and labyrinthine. Taxis are also quite expensive, and are not recommended for the budget conscious traveller. In the centre of Rome, it is recommended to be on foot, to best see the sights, and get a feel of the ancient city. Hiring a moped or a cycle is also a good option. Consider buying a Roma Pass if you intend to stay for at least 3 days, as it offers free admission to the first two museums/archaeological sites visited, as well as full access to the public transport system, and reduced tickets prices on further museums and site visits, as well as certain events around the city.
