Mauryan King Ashoka constructed many Buddhist monuments in and around Mathura in the 3rd century BC.
Mathura is the place where Lord Krishna (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu) was born and spent his childhood days. The ghats along the back of Yamuna River and the temples around Mathura depicts the place where Lord Krishna either took rest or spent good time in playing with his friends.
