Float Festival (Madurai, Tamil Nadu) January 30
On a full moon night, ornamented icons of goddess Meenakshi and her consort are taken out in a colorful procession to a huge temple. Its main feature is the elaborately illuminated barge carrying decorated temple deities at the Mariamman Teppakulam Pool amidst chanting hymns. The icons are floated in the tank on a raft decked with flowers and flickering lamps. Worth a watch!
 
Camel Festival (Bikaner, Rajasthan) January 10 - 11
Dedicated to the 'ship of the desert', it starts with a grand procession of bedecked camels. There are displays, competitions, lots of colour and music.
 
International Kite Festival (Ahmedabad, Gujarat) January 13 - 15
Look up on this day and you won't look elsewhere! On Makar Sakranti, Ahmedabad's sky is dotted with kites of different colours and patterns. Even at night, kites with little paper lamps soar high up. Imagine many a flickering lights.
 
Kerala Village Fair (Kovalam, Kerala) Mid-January
Every year in the lush villages around Kovalam (16 kms from Trivandrum), traditional thatch houses are decorated during this 10-day long festival. Look out for folk dances, music and festivities.
 
Pattadakal Dance Festival (Pattadakal, Karnataka) Mid-January
Delicately carved temples stand at this ancient capital of the Chalukya Kings. Look out for some great classical dance performances. Have fun!
 
Pongal (Tamil Nadu) January 15
A celebration of harvest, Pongal lasts for 3 days. Witness people with new dresses, decked up houses and lots of good food.
 
Kutch Festival (Kutch, Gujarat) January 28 - February 1
A guided tour of the life and times of Kutch, its beauty, nostalgia, ethos, traditions, culture and spirit. The festival organized by the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat, is a tour into the heartlands of Kutch, including a visit to Bhuj at the heart of Kutch; Mata no Madh, an old temple dedicated to the mother goddess believed to be 1200 years old and Lakhpat, a deserted port.
