Often called the Lucknow of Rajasthan, Tonk is a small town with a history of Pathan (tribesmen of Afghanistan) rule with the founder ruler being Nawab Mohammed Amir Khan (Year 1824). The Sunehri Kothi with its golden polished walls covered with Pachhikari and Meenakari work in diamond, glass and paintings is a must see.
The Jama Masjid Mosque constructed between 1246 and 1298 is another place where one can find golden paintings and Meenakari work on the walls. The architecture is quite similar to the Mughal architecture in Agra and Delhi.
Lakes and Camping Grounds
The hub for a range of bird species, Ranthambhore obviously has numerous lakes in and around the National Park. The one closest to the Park is also the best for bird watching. Surwal Lake, just 12 km from the Park is flocked by a variety of water birds, both resident and migratory. It is also one of the favorite camping grounds around here.
Mansarover Lake which lies about 20 km from the Park also attracts lots of migratory birds and is also known for its scenic beauty. Another favourite for campers is the Indergarh Fort which is located in a wildlife infested valley surrounded by forests. Another great spot for camping and boating is the Pali Ghat on the banks of the river Chambal and Devpura (15 km) is where you can find lots of antelopes and black bucks.
