To experience Mumbai, witness its exuberant festivals that usually cut across religions, class and caste. During Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, large processions set out on the streets carrying huge effigies of Lord Ganesha that are immersed in the sea. The festival falls in August or September. Gokulashtami is what the rest of the country calls Janmashtmi. Riotous celebrations take hold of the city wherein earthen pots filled with yogurt, sweets and money are suspended from high balconies and human pyramids of boys try to claim them.
On the cultural front, the Kala Ghoda Fair is held every December and January. An art and film festival, on Sundays it acquires the air of a carnival with people out on the streets, selling everything from home made food to pottery and paintings.
