Located about halfway between Mumbai and Pune, it is a favoured weekend and trekking getaway. Situated on the banks of River Ulhas, the town is surrounded by hills offering scenic views. The beauty and pollution free air of the town remain undisturbed due to the lack of factories and industries in the area since it has been declared a green zone.
There are quite a few places worth visiting in and around Karjat. Peth Fort situated on an interesting conical hill with a prominent thumb-like pinnacle, commands excellent views of the surrounding countryside while the Dhak Fort offers a great trek. Rajmachi, a twin peaked fort overlooking the Ulhas valley, lies close to Kondana Caves, a group of 4 ancient Buddhist caves that are situated on the lower part of the western slope. For the more adventurous, a long and strenuous trek up to Bahiri Caves is a good option. Caution is the keyword while undertaking this trek since it is very difficult and requires guidance from an expert who is familiar with the route. Besides, it is impossible to negotiate during monsoons, so one must attempt it only during winters.
