Matheran is a pedestrian hill station and no vehicles are allowed in. The last point vehicles can go to is Dasturi Naka, about 3 km from Matheran. There is a large parking lot at Dasturi Naka where you can park your car at a nominal fee of Rs. 30 for 24 hours. From Dasturi Naka, it is an uphill climb to Matheran. Porters, horses and rickshaws that are pulled by men are readily available. A porter would charge you about Rs. 80 - Rs. 100 while horse rides cost anywhere between Rs. 150 - Rs. 200.
Air: The nearest airport is in Mumbai, 110 km away.
Rail: Neral at 8 km is the nearest railhead. From here, make your way to in a shared taxi (Rs 45 per head) to Dasturi Naka. Better still, take the toy train (Blue Mini Rail) up to Matheran. The train doesn't run in monsoons.
Road: The last drivable point is Dasturi Naka where you can park your vehicle for Rs. 35 for every 24 hours. A convenient option option is to hire a cab from Mumbai which would cost you about Rs. 3,500. The drive lasts about 3 hours, depending on the traffic.
