Unlike all other hill stations, the charm of Lonavala-Khandala lies in not only the scenic beauty but also the numerous places of historical importance that dot this region. Of course, the main reason for honeymooners to come here is for the romantic touch that the beauty of the place provides. One such place, Ryewood Park, a big, beautiful garden, full of majestic tall trees, is frequented by couples and families alike. Close to this is a Christian Cemetery, which is worth a visit for the century old tombstones with work on them. Most of them have been desecrated and their precious engravings stolen. Another popular site is the Bushy Dam, not too far from Lonavala. A popular picnic site, the dam overflows during monsoons, giving way to a beautiful waterfall. The Duke's Nose, named after Duke Wellington, is a pointed cliff that offers the most beautiful views of the region.
Amongst the caves in the surrounding region that were carved by the monks and artisans who tried to imitate the carvings on wood, Karla Caves, dating back to 160 BC hold maximum importance. The biggest among Chaitya caves, their walls are adorned by exquisite carvings of different forms of Gautam Buddha and dancing couples. The entrance gate in the form of a 'peepul' leaf gives way to lion pillars and elephant forms. While the Bhaja Caves are created on the same lines, they are much smaller. The intriguing factor of these caves is that their dark interiors with carvings of gods and goddesses, are gilded by the rays of the setting sun. The golden glow is a sight that must not be missed.
