The most important festival celebrated here is Mahashivratri. The festival celebrates Shivas marriage with Parvati, the daughter of the Himalayas. The lingam of Kandariya Mahadeo temple is decorated like a bridegroom, and covered by a conical silver paper crown. The ceremony continues through the night by the chief priests son who bathes the lingam with water from the sacred rivers of India as holy verses are chanted.
The Khajuraho Dance Festival, organized in the months of February/March attracts visitors from around the world.
