This one's for the ladies - dupattas, earrings, bangles and bindis - you name it. Colours abound in Amritsar. Set out at any time of the day and you will weave through a kaleidoscopic fabric of women wearing chromatic salwar kameezes and men in vibrant pagdis. Try the narrow lanes of the Old City, leading off from the Golden Temple. Small shops are peppered in the old quarter with enthusiastic shopkeepers who'd cheerfully show you their wares and sell all of it at unbelievably low prices. Also visit the Kapda Bazaar near Town Hall, if not for shopping then for the experience. It's jostling with people with vendors who set shop on both sides of a narrow, very narrow gully, their platforms overflowing with cloth pieces in all colours and materials imaginable.
For some serious shopping, do pick up a phulkari outfit, the traditional embroidery technique of Punjab, from the Punjab Handloom Store on Madan Mohan Malviya road. Other shopping centric places include Hall Bazaar.
After sunset while strolling down the road leading from the Jallianwalla Bagh to the Golden Temple, be on a look out for road side vendors selling everything from dupattas, Sikh paraphernalia (t-shirts with 'Proud to be Sikh' slogan!), aam papad to vibrant head scarves that make for some funky bandannas.
You can also pick up the famous paapad and wadian from the ubiquitous shops around the city. Sikh literature is available at the shops in the golden temple complex. You will find all contemporary brands too, on Lawrence Road.
