It is all the more auspicious because it is on this day that Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa panth. The city jostles with colours and bhangra dances are popular. The Guru Granth Sahib is read in all the Gurdwaras and a procession is carried out in the city.
Ram Tirath
Ram Tirath is located about 11 km west of Amritsar on the Amritsar-Lopoke road. It is said that Sita spent her period of exile here and it was here that Valmiki wrote the epic of Ramayana. A large fair is held here a fortnight after Diwali which lasts for five days. On the night of Puranmashi, women light lamps made of kneaded flour and filled with ghee or mustard oil, place them on leaf plates or boat shaped carriers made of sarkanda reeds and release them to float in the sacred tank while reciting devotional songs and hymns. The ceremony is called tulla toarna (floating of tullas) and it is believed to wash your sins away. Visit for the atmosphere of great gaiety and devotion, and the beautiful sight of the lamps floating in the water.
