Note (19th March, 2010): Effective immediately if you have more than 20 Visa Applications cases then you need to take an appointment with VFS before submitting them.

Note (9th March, 2010): As per the instructions given by Chinese Embassy from 9th March 10. Applicants applying for Express cases (Tourist & Business) will require to submit Confirm return Air ticket.

From 16th March 09 Applicant holding Indian Passport applying for first time Tourist Visa Require to submit Original Bank Certificate with minimum balance of Rs 1.5 lacs.


Tourist Visa ("L" Visa)

Tourist and Family Visit Visa (L-Visa) is issued to a foreign citizen coming China for tourism, family visit or other personal affairs.

  • Original passport which has more than 6 months left before it expires from the date of application for a visa and sufficient blank visa pages.
  • One completed Visa Application Form (e-Form / Download) with a recently-taken passport photo; all the items on the application form should be completed neatly with genuine information; if the applicant has a Chinese name, the Chinese name should be filled in; false or incomplete information and illegible characters may lead to refusal of a visa.
  • Proof of sufficient finances to cover all expenditures in China when requied.
  • Confirmed return flight ticket and its photocopy.
  • Covering letter from applicant’s company or office.
  • Photocopy of personal data page of applicant’s passport.
  • Applying Tourist Visa for Visiting Families, the following documents are required:
    • Covering letter from applicant’s company or office.
    • Proof that you have a genuine ongoing relationship with the person inviting you in China and the copy of valid resident permit.
    • Invitation letter from your relatives.
    • Confirmed return flight ticket and its photocopy.
    • Photocopy of the personal data page of applicant’s passport.
  • An applicant holding a passport other than Indian passport should provide the original and a copy of their permanent residence or work permit which should be valid for at least half a year (except for those who are visa or permit exempt for residing or working in India).
  • Tourists planning to visit Tibet should contact the Tourism Administration of the Tibet Autonomous Region (Tel: 0086-891-6834313; Fax: 0086-891-6834632) and provide visa notification issued by it.
  • Foreigners applying for special tour to China should provide visa notification issued by China National Tourism Administration or the tourism administration of related province, autonomous region or municipality directly under the Central Government. Special tour includes: self-driving, hiking, cycling, horse-riding, hot air balloon, or other expeditions.
  • Processing time is 4 working days.
  • Urgent visa can be processed by the next working day (applications should be submitted before 11:00 a.m. Visa will be ready for collection at 2:00 p.m. on the second working day.
  • Visa fees and Service fee has to be paid when collecting the passport from VFS Center.
  • Visa fees as follows.

Note: 1. Visa fee are collected on behalf of the Chinese Embassy by VFS. 2. Application Service Fee are charged by the Center and they are non-refundable. 3. The total amount of the fees to be paid by an Applicant = Visa Fee + Application Service Fees. 4. If the Applicant requests Courier Delivery Service of his / her processed application, he / she need to pay visa fees + application service fees + courier delivery fees (INR 2000/-) in advance at the time of submission. 5. For Express Service (next working day collection), application should be submitted your before 11:00 am, and be picked up after 2:00 pm the next working day.

Business Visa ("F" Visa)

Business Visa (F-visa) is issued to a foreign citizen who is invited to China for visit, research, lecture, business, exchanges in the fields of science, technology, education, culture and sports, for attending various kinds of trade fairs or exhibitions, or short-term study, intern practice, for a period of no more than 6 months.

  • Original passport which has more than 6 months left before it expires from the date of application and sufficient blank visa pages.
  • One completed Visa Application Form (e-Form / Download) with a recently-taken passport photo; all the items on the application form should be completed neatly with genuine information; if the applicant has a Chinese name, the Chinese name should be filled in; false or incomplete information and illegible characters may lead to refusal of a visa.
  • Visa notification issued by an authorized unit in China (Visa notification refers to the form of visa notification issued by the government departments, companies and social organizations authorized by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. For detailed information, please consult the foreign affairs office of the province, autonomous region or municipality directly under the Central Government where your host is located). OR Or invitation letter from the legally registered company in China.
  • Covering letter from applicant's company or office with the details of the visiting purpose.
  • Photocopy of the personal data page of applicant’s passport.
  • An applicant holding a passport other than Indian passport should provide the original and a copy of their permanent residence or work permit which should be valid for at least half a year(except for those who are visa or permit exempt for residing or working in India).
  • In addition to the above-mentioned documents, applicants applying for short-term study in China should also provide:
    • Admission Notice (original and copy).

  • Hotel confirmation.
  • Processing time is 4 working days.
  • Urgent visa can be processed by the next working day (applications should be submitted before 11:00 a.m. Visa will be ready for collection at 2:00 p.m. on the second working day.
  • Visa fees and Service fee has to be paid when collecting the passport from VFS Center.

Transit Visa ("G" Visa)

  • Original covering letter, with a Company Seal, from the Applicant company or Organization, addressed to The Visa Officer, Embassy of the People's Republic of China, New Delhi - 110 021.
    • Confirmed onward/ return air ticket.
  • Applicants should have destination country or region visa First and a photocopy of the valid visa.
  • Photocopy of the personal data page of applicant’s passport.
  • Consular officers may request an applicant to provide additional supporting documents when called for. The applicant should provide it as soon as possible.
  • Visa is valid for three months with stay of maximum stay of 7 days.
  • This can be for single or double entry in accordance with the confirmed air ticket and onward visae.

  • Indian Seamen traveling on duty must hold Letter of Guarantee from the Shipping Company and the Seamen Book.
  • A letter from the Shipping Agent stating particulars of the Seamen, date and port of joining the ship and a fax/ telex from the Shipping Agent in China.
  • Visa is valid for 3 months, with a maximum stay of 7 days.

Student Visa ("X" Visa)

Student Visa (X-visa) is issued to a foreign citizen who comes to China for the purpose of study for a period of six or more months. Those intending to study in China for less than six months should apply for a business visa (F-visa).

  • Original passport which has more than 18 months left before it expires from the date of application for a visa and sufficient blank visa pages.
  • One completed Visa Application Form (e-Form / Download) with a recently-taken passport photo; all the items on the application form should be completed neatly with genuine information; if the applicant has a Chinese name, the Chinese name should be filled in; false or incomplete information and illegible characters may lead to refusal of a visa.
  • Admission Notice (original and copy).
  • Visa Application for Study in China (Form JW-201 or Form JW-202, original and copy).
  • Original covering letter, with a Company Seal, from the Applicant company or Organization, addressed to The Visa Officer, Embassy of the People's Republic of China, New Delhi - 110 021.
  • Covering letter from the Applicant's recently graduated School, University or by the Applicant himself/ herself.

Work Permit ("Z" Visa)

Work Visa (Z-visa) is issued to a foreign citizen who is to take up a post or employment in China and his or her accompanying family members, or to give commercial performances in China.

  • Original passport which has more than 6 months left before it expires from the date of application and sufficient blank visa pages (18 months and more left if intended stay in China is more than one year).
  • One completed Visa Application Form (e-Form / Download) with a recently-taken passport photo. All the items on the application form should be fully filled in with genuine information; if the applicant has a Chinese name, the Chinese name should be filled in; false or incomplete information and illegible characters may lead to refusal of a visa.
  • Covering letter from Applicant.
  • "Physical Examination Record for Foreigner", not more than 6 months old, issued by a Doctor from a Government Hospital. The photo on the Record should be stamped by the hospital.
  • Photocopy of the personal data page of applicant’s passport.
  • Photocopy of Applicants Educational qualification or Professional qualification
  • Employment Approval Documents required:


    • (A) Foreigners who come to China to take up employment as experts, scholars, teachers, managerial personnel and as personnel working in related state or local organizations should provide:
    (1) Confirmation Letter of Retaining Foreign Experts issued by the State Bureau of Foreign Experts (original).
    (2) Visa Notification issued by an authorized unit in China (original).

    (B) Foreign technical personnel who come to China for offshore petroleum operations should provide, a 'Letter of Invitation to Foreigners for Offshore Petroleum Operations in China' issued by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (original).

    (C) Chief Representative or representative of foreign offices resident in China should provide:
    (1) The Registration Certificate of Resident Representative Office of Foreign (Regional) Enterprises issued by the concerned administrative department of industry and commerce; or an Approval Document for the Resident Representative Offices of Foreign Enterprises issued by concerned commercial departments.
    (2) Visa notification issued by an authorized unit in China (original).

    (D) Personnel who come to China to implement aid or technical cooperative projects should provide:
    (1) Bilateral or multilateral agreement between the Chinese Government and foreign government or international organization, for cooperation and exchange;
    (2) Visa notification issued by an authorized unit in China (original).

    (E) Personnel who come to China for commercial performance should provide:
    (1) Approval document (also copy) issued by the Ministry of Culture or the Cultural Department of related province, autonomous region or municipality directly under the Central Government;
    (2) Visa notification issued by the Ministry of Culture or the foreign affairs office of related province, autonomous region and municipality directly under the Central Government.

    (F) Personnel other than those mentioned above should provide:
    (1) The Employment Permit for Foreigners issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.
    (2) Visa notification issued by an authorized unit in China (original).

    (G) Accompanying family dependents of personnel working in China should provide related note, letter or visa notification issued by an authorized unit or documents proving their status as dependents.

Z-visa is usually issued with a single entry, valid for 3 months and with no duration of stay (i.e. 000 day of stay). Holders of work visa should go through the formalities for a residence permit at a local public security bureau within 30 days after entry into China, to avoid illegal stay in China. The period of validity of the residence permit is its holder's duration of stay in China.

Consular officers decide on the visa's period of validity, duration of stay and number of entries in light of China's laws and regulations.

The decision to issue a visa and its type shall be decided by Consular officers in the light of China's relevant laws and regulations.

Note: 1. Visa fee are collected on behalf of the Chinese Embassy by VFS. 2. Application Service Fee are charged by the Center and they are non-refundable. 3. The total amount of the fees to be paid by an Applicant = Visa Fee + Application Service Fees. 4. If the Applicant requests Courier Delivery Service of his / her processed application, he / she need to pay visa fees + application service fees + courier delivery fees (INR 2000/-) in advance at the time of submission. 5. For Express Service (next working day collection), application should be submitted your before 11:00 am, and be picked up after 2:00 pm the next working day. Please Note: (i) Applications should be made not more than 3 months and not less than 1 month ahead of the intended date of entry into China. Failure to submit visa application at an appropriate time, may lead to the refusal of visa or the expiry of an already-issued visa. (ii) The visa application form should be fully filled in and signed by the Applicant upon completion (application for an Applicant under 18 years of age should be signed by one the parents). Items which are not applicable should be filled in with N/A. (iii) Consular officers may request an Applicant to provide additional supporting documents when called for. The Applicant should provide it as soon as possible.

Dependent visa

  • Original passport, valid for 6 months before the date of application. Photocopy of front and last page.
  • One completed Visa Application Form (downloaded e-Form- photocopy allowed).
  • Two recent passport-size photographs (not older than 3 months (not scanned), 35 x 45 mm in size with white background).
  • Original covering letter, with a Company Seal, from the Applicant company or Organization, addressed to The Visa Officer, Embassy of the People's Republic of China, New Delhi - 110 021.
  • A covering letter from the husband/ father giving all his personal details and he should mention that he will will take care of all the expenses. The letter should be addressed to The Visa Officer, Embassy of the People's Republic of China, New Delhi - 110 021.
  • A formal invitation from husband/ father inviting his wife/ child.
  • Visa notification letter issued by Chinese Goverment in favor of applicant.
  • Original Marriage / Birth certificate of the applicant.
  • Physical Examination from, the photogarph to be pasted on it and should be attested by the doctor.
  • A copy of the passport, visa, working card and any other relevant document of the husband/ father.
  • Processing time is 4 working days in normal process.
