Originally known as British Atlantic Airways, the airline got its new name in the year 1984. The airline began operations on June 22nd, 1984 with the first flight between Gatwick and Newark with a leased Boeing 747-200 aircraft. In March, 2000, the company sold 49 percent stakes to Singapore Airlines. Since then the airline has grown to be one of the best airlines in the world. Virgin Atlantic Airlines used Airbus A340-600 in June 2002 and became the first airline to do so. The airline celebrated its 25th anniversary in June, 2009 with a series of exclusive offers, events and offered special red hot fares to popular destinations of the world.
