Owned by the government of Kuwait and based in Kuwait City, Kuwait Airways is the national flag carrier of Kuwait. The Kuwait International Airport is the main base of Kuwait Airways, from where it operates domestic as well as international flights connecting Kuwait to the more important cities in the Middle East, Europe and Asia. A member of the Arab Air Carriers Organisation, Kuwait Airways connects Kuwait City to 41 destinations across 26 countries spread across the world. Established in 1954 by two Kuwaiti businessmen and later taken over by the government at a time when it was facing a financial crisis, Kuwait Airways initially operated in a limited network comprising Abadan, Beirut, Damascus and Jerusalem. In 1962, Kuwait Airways leased its first jet engine aircraft, a Comet 4-C and thereafter extended its flight sectors to include London, with three flights a week connecting Kuwait City to London.
