Naresh Goyal, the owner and Chairman of Jet Airways as a full-service scheduled airline to compete with government owned Indian Airlines. In 1995, Jet Airways received its scheduled airline status and started flying internationally to Colombo, thus emerging as an international carrier. In May 2009, Jet Airways launched another low cost airline Jet Konnect, which used spare aircrafts from Jet Airway's routes that were discontinued due to low passenger load factors. The recession hit Jet Airways badly and it laid off around 1900 staff members. Later however, they were recruited back. But Jet Airways had to discontinue many of its international bound flights, sell a brand new yet-to-be-delivered Boeing 777-300ER and had to defer all new aircraft deliveries by at least two years.
