One of the busiest airports in China, the Macau International Airport (MFM) is a commonly used transfer point for those travelling between China and Taiwan. It is situated at the eastern end of Taipa Island, and opened in November 1995. In the year 2006, Macau International Airport handled approximately 5 million passengers and 220,000 tonnes of cargo. Macau has its own immigration policies and is a separate customs territory from mainland China, and so, flights between Macau and mainland China are therefore treated as international flights. 12 international airlines serve the airport, and it is also a major cargo hub for the region.
