Excellent location. A great expreriance in terms of staying at a hertiage palace hotel. A true palace I must stay. However still a lot needs to be done in terms of upgradation of hotel and services. A property of great potential if upgraded, managed and marketed well.

My experience at Shalini Palace was extremely frustrating to say the least. We had gone to Kolhapur to visit the Ambabai temple, and I had planned to extend the stay for another night of Saturday 23rd, for a relaxed vacation. But seeing the rooms and service, I was completely disappointed, and had it not been the late evening at 9.30 p.m. and elderly parents and my 3 year old girl, we would certainly have left without checking in. You may perhaps be interested to know why. Here is the list: I understand that the hotel is no more under the management of Welcome group. So why is it still called a Welcome Heritage hotel? The local management is most unprofessional. The service is below mark. The quality of rooms, especially in the Annexe building, is pathetic. The linen in the rooms was unclean, possibly used by earlier guests. There was no drinking water in the room, but half empty bottles left behind by earlier guests. We had to order from room service and of course pay for it every time. We had booked 2 double rooms, but there were two single beds in the room. We were not informed earlier, and found out the beds could not be joined (for accommodating the child) and additional bed was not possible and would not help anyway. Since we couldn’t join the 2 single beds, we were forced to move to another room, but there was only one available, the expensive Maharani Suite. The name is a misnomer – there was nothing Maharani about it. The only two things I can praise are a) it was extremely spacious and b) the double bed was big and comfortable. Everything else was sad. The sofa set was dirty and stained. The upholstery on the sofa on the balcony was torn, and the foam was crumbling to pieces. There was a TV set in the room, but the picture quality was bad and no one attempted to fix it even after having compained about it. There were mosquitoes, but protection (Good night or Odomos or mosquito net) was not provided, and was supplied only when demanded. The mini refrigerator was out of order and fungus was formed inside. Don’t know when they had last cleaned it. The commode hand shower was not in order. There was no shower curtain and exhaust in the bath room. The flush was not working well, and the flush tank was leaking – the entire bathroom floor was covered with water by morning. There was no hot water in the bathroom for bathing the child. The shower was pathetic, there was a trickle with the tap fully open. Here is the best (or perhaps worst) part – there was a bucket in the bathroom, it was not too clean but the bigger problem – there was a lizard in the bucket! I had to throw a tantrum and shout a bit – then there was an army of people in the bathroom for about 15 mins, and at the end of it, the lizard was gone, and I had a clean bucket. But still no hot water. The food quality at the Darbar restaurant left much to be desired, at best it was just average. The choice of breakfast was just two items: upama and pohe. Juice, cornflakes, eggs and bread toast was not available. All in all, not worth a visit, don’t be misled by the Welcom Heritage tag and 3 stars. Here’s a thought - The imposing structure of the palace is awe inspiring, the design and intricate carvings are a treat, and the location, overlooking the Rankala lake, is excellent. But poor management, bad maintenance and pathetic attitude and service have ruined the Shalini Palace’s Heritage reputation. But I am confident that good management and a clear vision will be able to restore it to its earlier grandeur, and once again make it worthy of a Palace Hotel. Hope this happens…
