The city’s most famous commercial street, the buzzing Park Street has the Park Hotel, St. Thomas Church, old restaurants, St. Xavier’s College, label showrooms and the unusual Hobby Centre.
Esplanade is a traveler’s delight with Shaheed Minar, cinema halls, markets, restaurants and pubs lined up one after the other. The New Market, which is ironically one of the oldest markets in India, is located here as is the famous Oberoi Grand Hotel.
The city’s most prominent landmark, the Victoria Memorial was set up in 1921 under the aegis of Lord Curzon in memory of Queen Victoria. Along with a statue of the Queen, it houses a museum. It is a must-see for visitors to the city.
The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport located at Dum Dum about 18 kms from the city is the gateway to the north eastern states of India. The international and domestic terminals are located in one building and abound in facilities.
Divided into north and south, the station is in close proximity to Jute Mills and fruit and vegetable wholesale markets. The Howrah Bridge is right across the station with jetty rides galore in the Hoogly River.
A popular residential area, Ballygunge is also home to the famous Birla Temple and the Ice Skating Rink. It also houses the Calcutta School of Music and the Birla Industrial Museum.
A posh locality, Alipore houses the Alipore Zoo, Aquarium Museum, National Library, Kolkata Police CID headquarter, Bhavani Bhavan, Central Jail, Horticulture Garden that hosts the International Flower Show and the Taj Bengal Hotel of the Taj Group.
