The City Palace founded by Sawai Jai Singh is a blend of Mughal and Rajasthani architecture. Places worth seeing here are Mubarak Mahal, Sawai Man Singh Museum and the Maharani’s Palace. Interestingly, the royal family still lives in the palace.
The Palace of Winds was built by King Sawai Pratap Singh. The five storey building with its pink delicately honeycombed 953 sandstone windows called jharokhas, overlooking the bazaar street is a stunning replica of Rajput architecture and artistry.
This is another of Sawai Man Singh’s vast aspirations. This royal observatory is the derivation of the term Yantra Mantra i.e. formulae and equipment. There are 14 astronomical devices at the Jantar Mantar, each with a specific function to perform.
Civil Lines is a posh housing colony in central Jaipur. The area is one of the oldest and encompasses Jai Ambey Colony and Kachi Basti. The Governor’s and the CM’s residences are nearby as is the ESI hospital on Ajmer Road.
Centrally located, the MI road is a shopping hub selling everything from a trinket to domestic goods. Starting from Johri Bazar, it connects to Station Road, which has all bus and train services. Some gates of the walled city also open on this road.
Amer Fort, also known as Amber Fort, is a blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture. Constructed by Raja Man Singh I in 1592 and completed by Sawai Jai Singh I, it is made in red sandstone and white marble with an exquisite fusion of art and architecture.
