Sharavanbelgola Overview
Shravanabelagola is a major Jain pilgrim centre in India, and is best known for Asia’s largest free standing stone carving, and the second largest in the world. This comes in the shape of a statue of Lord Gomteswara, who stands 58 ft tall. The other structures around the statue are simple yet beautiful, and on the whole the pilgrim centre is an interesting place even for the non-devotional.The statue is atop the Vindhyagiri Hill, which gives you an amazing view of the surrounding countryside. There is also temple complex atop a solid granite hill here, and 610 steps lead up the side. This place too makes for a beautiful vantage point. The smaller Chandragiri hill is filled with Jain temples and tomb of Chandra Gupta Maurya, along with exquisite sculptures and carving.
