About Patnitop history all we can understand is the history of Jammu where it is located and Suryavanshi King Jambu Lochan on his hunting expedition once, after crossing the river Tawi, noticed a deer drinking water alongside a Tiger, without fear or any hesitation, which surprised the King, when his ministers explained the sanctity of that location which will be a peace maintaining place even among arch enemies, the King thereupon decided to settle his kingdom there, and the place named after him as Jambu nagar, later over a period of time changed to Jammu, where his brother Bahu Lochan constructed a Fort called Bahu Fort, while subsequent history of Jammu not well explained by historians, in 1730 AD, Dogra King Raja Dhruv Deva moved his capital to Jammu, finding it an important centre for art and culture, promoting Pahari School of Paintings.
